About The Position

An Invasive Cardiovascular Technologist, also known as a Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist, plays a crucial role in diagnosing and treating heart diseases. This role is responsible for performing all required procedures in the Cardiac Catheterization /EP Laboratories and operating specialized equipment. This includes X-ray equipment, computer systems, and hemodynamic monitoring. The technologist will have working knowledge of invasive cardiac procedures, perform first and second assist duties under physician supervision, prepare patients and equipment for cardiac catheterization and interventions, and perform common catheterization interventions such as stent placements, balloon angioplasties, heart valve replacements, and electrophysiology tests. They will also operate intracardiac or intravascular ultrasound equipment, fluoroscopy equipment, or other imaging systems, assist with handling venous and arterial catheters and wires, monitor blood pressure and heart rate using ECG equipment during procedures, calculate hemodynamic or physiologic values, and record waveforms for patient records. Additionally, they will retrieve and analyze imaging and other data obtained during procedures.

Requirements

Graduate of approved program of radiological technology required
Prior Cardiac Cath Lab experience preferred.
EKG interpretation, arrhythmia recognition, radiology
ARRT (RT) - American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (Radiologic Technologist)
RT - MA - Radiologic Technologist - MA State License
ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support

Responsibilities

Captures all documentation required for all procedures in Mac/Cardio according to standards.
Maintains accuracy of database, ensuring all patients and procedures are recorded accurately.
Verifies procedure log is accurate and assists MD with procedure reports.
Utilizes knowledge of A/P and cardiac procedures to document in Mac/Cardio Lab appropriately and carefully, including flushing of sheaths, maintaining sheath integrity, introducing catheters, obtaining hemodynamic and angiographic data, assisting with mechanical atherectomy and thrombectomy devices, positioning, inflating, and deflating balloons and stents, assisting with exchanges, and performing post-access care and management.
Conveys pertinent patient history to the Physician.
Operates electronic equipment to monitor patients' heart rhythm and blood pressure during procedures.
Prepares and assists MD with radiographic equipment, EP/Vascular and coronary equipment, and cardiac cath equipment such as IABP and Angiojet.
Prepares, operates, and maintains other Cardiac Cath/EP equipment according to policy/manufacturer recommendations (e.g., ACT machine, ablator, OCT, IVUS, RFR, IFR, FFR, Cath Works, Angiojet, CSI).
Demonstrates thorough knowledge of location, care, and operation of all cath lab equipment, troubleshooting simple equipment problems or notifying appropriate resources.
Verifies patient identification with two identifiers prior to the start of any invasive procedure, including "time out", administration of care, medications, labeled specimens, and documents confirming the correct patient, procedure, site, equipment, and consent.
Complies with current CDC hand hygiene guidelines, adheres to universal precautions, makes appropriate use of personal protective equipment, and appropriately disposes of hazardous materials.
Assesses each patient’s risk of falling using appropriate interventions.
Ensures environment meets regulatory requirements.
Understands and demonstrates individual roles and responsibilities in the event of hospital codes/emergency preparedness.
Holds oneself and others accountable for meeting quality improvement/quality standards.
Utilizes the chain of command to report any potential or actual patient safety risks.
Attends at least 5 CEUs in specialty area each year.
Attends hospital sponsored training programs as required.
Active participant in unit based initiatives.

Functions as "tech in charge" as assigned.
Trains staff technologists and assists with all Cath Lab personnel and students.

Maintains up-to-date quality control program of all radiographic equipment.
Coordinates annual radiation safety in-service class for departmental staff.
Coordinates and maintains equipment (X-ray) maintenance prevention program.
Gathers data for monthly fluoroscopy use report.
Responsible for distribution and changing of film badges as assigned.
Uses practical knowledge of anatomy for proper positioning to obtain maximum diagnostic information.
Selects technical factors to ensure high quality radiographs using the A.L.A.R.A. standards.
Practices radiation safety with all radiographic equipment and overseas that others practice radiation safety.
Performs various clerical duties including verification of information and procedures performed in cardiac catheterization log book and computer system.
Assures correct billing of patient accounts and regularly reconciles patient billing.
Maintains accuracy of log book and Mac Lab database.
Maintains stock inventory and initiates orders of all procedure areas.
Notifies Lead Tech/NM of stock replacement needs and orders equipment as needed.
Properly charges for all medical surgical items used.
Restocks as needed.
