About The Position

The Casualty Unit Manager leads and manages a team of inside and/or remote Casualty Claim Representatives responsible for the timely, fair, and accurate investigation, evaluation, and resolution of liability and medical payment claims across personal and commercial lines. Ensures adherence to regulatory requirements, company standards, and service expectations while fostering a high-performing, customer-focused team.

Requirements

  • College degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of liability and commercial casualty claims experience.
  • Previous experience and understanding of claims department operations and property and casualty insurance principles.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership, coaching and development skills.
  • Possesses skills and ability to perform investigations and evaluations.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills for interacting with other associates, agents, insureds, and numerous other outside contacts and customers.
  • Demonstrates strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrates strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses volume and nature of claims to be processed by casualty claims representatives.
  • Ensures compliance with Unfair Claims Practices, Federal and State reporting, and primary payor laws.
  • Provides continual coaching, development, and training to all associates within the team by auditing claim files, evaluating overall performance, and completing annual performance reviews.
  • Reviews coverage decisions and approves reservation of rights and denial letters.
  • Responsible for large loss recognition and timely reinsurance reporting.
  • Maintains a regular diary system to review claims for quality, reserve adequacy, and regulatory compliance.
  • Interviews, hires and onboards new associates; may participate in interviewing candidates within other teams of the Casualty Unit.
  • Serves as a unit resource for answering questions by claim representatives regarding complex claims, appropriate procedures, authorities, and other areas.
  • Maintains current knowledge of industry trends and evolving legal requirements; participates in relevant training, seminars, and professional development activities as appropriate.
  • Develops agency relations through visits, answering questions, and keeping agents informed of claim-related changes.
  • Actively engages and initiates continuous improvement ideas and projects.
  • Works closely and effectively collaborates with other unit managers in delivering communications and directions to the units impacted.
  • Delivers high-quality service by effectively responding to questions, concerns, and feedback from insureds, claimants, agents, and other customers.
  • Performs various administrative activities such as reviewing, preparing, and running reports, assisting with follow-up letters to insureds regarding coverage, and attending agency meetings and functions.
  • Reviews and approves expense reports/accounts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
