About The Position

This is an Expression of Interest for a Casual Plant Operator position located in Inuvik, NT. Casual employment is on an as-and-when basis and full time hours are not guaranteed. Resumes collected through this EOI will be kept on file and referred to for six (6) months in consideration of casual support requirements. In a team environment and under the general supervision and direction of the Manager Plant Operations in the Beaufort Delta, the Casual Plant Operator is responsible for the operation and maintenance of power generation facilities while ensuring the safe, efficient and reliable supply of electricity to the community. Responsibilities include the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the Inuvik power grid system, including diesel and gas engines, the battery energy storage system (BESS) and wind turbine. This role also involves the routine maintenance of generation assets, plant buildings, auxiliary equipment, yards and fencing.

Requirements

  • High School diploma (or equivalent) plus related mechanical or electrical experience or plant operator training, OR a minimum of Grade 10 education with at least three (3) years relevant mechanical or electrical experience. Equivalencies may be considered.
  • A full valid Class 5 NWT driver’s license is required.
  • Steel-toed boots are required.
  • Computer skills to operate a variety of software related to financial, administrative and reporting systems, electronic mail, internet, etc.
  • Excellent knowledge of safety regulations and procedures.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with minimal direct supervision in a location that is remote from the regional office.
  • Good oral and written communication skills to maintain effective, open and reliable communications with team members, customers, and community representatives.
  • Administrative, supervisory and organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and assignments, direct the work of staff and provide documentation, reports and recommendations to the Manager Plant Operations.
  • Must be willing to travel for mandatory training.

Nice To Haves

  • A course in Power Engineering, Building Maintenance or one with an electrical/mechanical orientation would be an asset.
  • A related journeyperson certification would be an asset.
  • A valid First Aid and CPR certification would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Always work safely and adhere to all aspects of the NTPC Health, Safety and Environmental programs, comply with all rules and regulations, continually practice health and safety while performing any duties.
  • Must have the ability to safely operate a loader for snow removal and for moving materials around the worksite.
  • Start and stop diesel engines, gas engines and wind turbines as per operational requirements.
  • Inspect and maintain tank farm and LNG tank farm along with learning the LNG tank farm operations to assist drivers with any issues, fuel transfer lines and pump hoses and fuel tank levels. Report any unusual conditions immediately to supervisor.
  • Monitor and operate all generation units, including diesel and gas gensets, wind turbines, solar systems and the battery energy storage system (BESS). Operate and monitor plant systems such as heating, ventilation, compressors and station service batteries per operational requirements and manufacturer's recommendations. Log required readings and promptly report any system malfunctions and alarms.
  • Immediately notify Control Centre personnel and the Manager Plant Operations of any unusual conditions that may affect system performance.
  • Remain reachable and fit for duty while on standby to respond to power plant issues or assist in restoring power.
  • Participate in team meetings in accordance with the principles of team management to determine generation program objectives, provide input to group financial and program planning, assess and coordinate unit workload and priorities.
  • Provide training to and receive training from co-workers and perform other duties related to Energy North Operations as determined by the Manager Plant Operations in the Beaufort Delta.
  • Other duties as required.
