About The Position

Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University of Hawai'i may apply for Casual Hire positions, which include administrative, professional, and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees such as paid leave and holidays. Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees, and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees. This position is a temporary casual hire position and offers no benefits, 89 day appointment, not to exceed 40 hours/week.

Requirements

  • Pre-Licensed Mental Health Professional: Masters of Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, Counseling, or related field OR Licensed Mental Health Professional: Masters of Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, Counseling or related field and license to practice as a mental health professional in the State of Hawaii and must hold one of the following (a) Licensed Clinical Social Worker (b) Licensed Psychologist (c) Licensed MFT Therapist or (d) Licensed Mental Health Counselor
  • 3 years of progressive responsibilities in mental health counseling/therapy within an athletic environment, completed within the last 5 years; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of mental health/wellness prevention/education and/or service provision as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with mental health/wellness prevention/education and/or service provision.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and word processing software and spreadsheet software.
  • Holds and maintains an unrestricted license to practice as a mental health professional in the State of Hawaii.
  • Demonstrated ability to pay attention to details and strong organizational skills.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule depending on programmatic needs.
  • Demonstrated understanding of, and strict compliance with, privacy regulations including HIPAA and FERPA.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge and functional understanding of the unique stressors and experiences faced by Division 1 Athletes.
  • Experience practicing individual and/or group psychotherapy.
  • Experience in working with and diagnosing common mental health disorders (depression, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder).
  • Experience working with and treating eating disorders.

Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Director of Mental Health Care Services / Counseling, serves as a Licensed or Pre-Licensed mental health professional functioning as therapist / counselor for UHM student-athletes.
  • Collaborates with a multi-disciplinary team responsible for maintaining the mental health and wellness of student-athletes.
  • Responsible for triaging referrals and coordinating cases with other members of the healthcare delivery team.
  • Integrate sports psychology principles to support student-athletes through athletic-specific challenges, providing targeted interventions for injury rehabilitation, performance anxiety, stress management, and life transitions into or out of collegiate sports.
  • Independently conduct psychosocial assessments and provide psychosocial treatment for a broad spectrum of clinical, behavioral and academic concerns.
  • Independently manage a full clinical caseload, conducting regular, one-on-one counseling and psychotherapy sessions to provide continuous care for student-athletes.
  • Supports the student-athlete in a sensitive and supportive manner, while acting as an advocate on behalf of the patient.
  • Maintain accurate, current, and up to date notes as part of patient Mental Health records, for all patients seen.
  • Maintain collaborative working relationships with administrators and coaches in the department, other college offices, and appropriate relationships with individuals interested in the Athletics Department.
  • Promote and maintain an environment where the physical, mental, social and academic well-being of all student-athletes are a priority.
  • Responsible for performing the duties of a Campus Security Authority as defined by University policy and federal law with regards to the Clery Act.
  • Maintains confidentiality to include but not limited to information, files and records that the incumbent may obtain or possess, in accordance with federal and state laws and University of Hawaii policies.
  • Know, recognize, and comply with the laws, policies, rules, and regulations governing the University of Hawaii and its employees, and the rules of the NCAA and affiliated conferences as now constituted or as may be amended in the future.
  • Immediately advises the Director of Mental Health/Counseling Services if you have reasonable cause to believe violations, whether by employees, students, or others have occurred or will occur.
