About The Position

The Casting (Orthopedic) Technician demonstrates competence, caring, and compassion when performing technical and supportive patient care skills. This includes incorporating the patient’s plan of care, recognizing age-specific requirements, and following approved policy and procedure. The role requires competence in the application, molding, and removal of casts, splints, durable medical equipment, and wound care.

Requirements

• High School diploma or general education degree (GED)
• Two years of directly related orthopedic technician work experience OR
• Completion of one or more of the following combinations: Orthopedic Tech/Prosthetics Tech Program and zero years of casting experience
• Medical Assistant program and 1 year of casting experience
• Nurse Assistant program and 1 year of casting experience
• Medical Corpsman and 1 year of casting experience
• EMT program and 1 year of casting experience
• Current enrollment in professional nursing program with completion of introductory nursing course work and zero years of casting experience
• BLS certification required

Responsibilities

• Apply cast – fiberglass and plaster under the direction of a physician
• Fit braces – upper and lower extremity under the direction of a physician
• Splints – upper and lower extremity under the direction of a physician
• Molds for Custom Braces under the direction of a physician
• Suture and Staple removal under the direction of a physician
• Assist with patient flow within assigned outpatient clinic setting
• Accurately perform test for blood glucose
• Safely and properly prepare medications/injections
• Provide explanation when obtaining vital signs or other technical skills
• Use aseptic technique and infection control measures in the performance of duties
• Measure and record intake and output as ordered
• Prepare and assist patients care priorities, treatment plan, objectives, and potential care
• Recognize patient care priorities, treatment plan, objectives, and potential crisis
• Provide other treatments and care to patients appropriate to training as assigned, under the direction of an RN
• Recognize and communicate patient needs and unusual occurrences with patients/families
• Accurately document and communicate interventions and measurements
• Communicate relevant information to appropriate health care provider
• Complete accurate, concise, and legible documentation on patient clinic record under supervision
• Assist in the maintenance of equipment, supplies, and the environment
• Check equipment/supplies for expiration dates, electrical safety tags, intactness, and usability
• Clean equipment and return to its proper place
• Report equipment and supplies needing replaced or repaired
• Stock rooms, carts, cabinets, etc. as assigned/requested
• Practice positive customer and peer relations
• Consistently communicate in a professional and courteous manner
• Report and seek assistance in dealing with guest complaints/concerns
• Establish and maintain a positive rapport with patient/family and co-workers
• Consistently respond to customer requests/needs in an appropriate manner
