About The Position

This position performs advanced carpentry duties with only general supervision. Key responsibilities include driving to construction sites or the UAMS Main Campus, independently reading and understanding architectural plans and specifications, developing work timelines, and defining material requirements for projects of various sizes. The Carpenter must efficiently assess actual conditions of spaces being renovated or remodeled, develop templates, minimize material requirements, and implement plans to avoid obstructions. The role involves working independently or as an advanced carpenter on a team, guiding others to construct walls, install doorframes and doors, install suspended and sheetrock ceilings, and hang drywall. Precision work with specialty materials like metals and plastics is required for projects such as cabinetry installation, finishing, and manufacturing. The position also demands cross-training with advanced proficiency in other maintenance and construction areas, including finishing drywall for painting, painting, staining, and installing/repairing various floor coverings (carpet, vinyl, ceramic tile). Documentation for the Engineering & Operations work order system and preventative maintenance program is essential. This role requires a high level of technical skills for independent problem identification and resolution, and the ability to provide oversight for 3rd party contractor work. As an experienced craftsman, the Carpenter is responsible for renovating and remodeling Medical, Educational, and Research facilities on the UAMS Campus, ensuring the safety, comfort, and general wellbeing of patients, students, and employees.
