About The Position

Kokosing is seeking Carpenters for Heavy Highway – Roadway/Bridge projects in the Tidewater area of Virginia (Chesapeake/Norfolk/Newport News). This role involves constructing, erecting, and repairing structures, with a preference for experience in form work for bridges and structures. The job requires the use of hand and power tools, understanding blueprints, and working with various materials to build concrete forms and structures. The position also involves assisting with concrete pouring and finishing, and erecting scaffolding.

Requirements

  • Must have own hand tools.
  • Skilled in use of necessary hand and power tools.
  • Must be able to work with level.
  • Carpenter Training Program or equivalent, or experience in bridge work, i.e. bridge form work.
  • Ability to read blueprints.
  • Ability to read rule.
  • Regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
  • Frequently work or walk on uneven ground.
  • Required to wear steel toed boots at all times.
  • Occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

  • Preferred experience with form work for bridges/structures.

Responsibilities

  • Constructs, erects, and repairs structures.
  • Works while tied off to fall protection.
  • Studies and understands blueprints, sketches, or bridge plans.
  • Selects specified type of lumber or other materials.
  • Prepares layout.
  • Measures boards, timbers, or plywood, and marks cutting lines on materials.
  • Shapes materials to prescribed measurements.
  • Nails cleats (braces) across boards to construct concrete-supporting forms.
  • Braces forms in place with timbers, tie rods, and anchor bolts, for use in building concrete piers, footing, and walls.
  • Assembles cut and shaped materials and fastens them together with nails, dowel pins, or glue.
  • Sets expansion dams.
  • Assembles or runs overhang modules or stick built overhangs.
  • Climbs wingwalls, retaining walls.
  • Assembles wood deck forms.
  • Constructs forms and chutes for pouring concrete.
  • Assists in pouring and finishing of concrete.
  • Erects scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
