About The Position

The Carpenter is a skilled journeyman-level trades position within the Central Maintenance Services / Physical Plant Department responsible for performing advanced carpentry, construction, renovation, and building maintenance activities throughout AIDB facilities. This position performs a wide variety of rough and finish carpentry duties requiring extensive knowledge of commercial construction practices, building systems, materials, tools, and maintenance procedures. The Carpenter is responsible for planning, organizing, and completing construction and maintenance projects while ensuring work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established standards, specifications, blueprints, and architectural drawings. The Carpenter provides leadership and direction to assigned employees, helpers, and temporary workers while coordinating construction activities, monitoring project progress, and ensuring quality workmanship. This position requires the ability to independently troubleshoot building issues, determine appropriate solutions, manage assigned projects, and communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, contractors, and campus personnel. The Carpenter plays a critical role in maintaining AIDB’s educational, residential, administrative, and support facilities by ensuring buildings remain safe, functional, accessible, and professionally maintained. Through skilled craftsmanship and project leadership, this position directly supports AIDB’s mission of providing exceptional services and opportunities to individuals who are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind, and multidisabled.

Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Valid Driver License required; must meet AIDB vehicle insurance eligibility requirements.
Minimum of eight (8) years of successful carpentry experience required.
Must meet suitability requirements for employment.

Nice To Haves

Four (4) years of experience in commercial building maintenance preferred.
Five (5) years of related full-time work experience and/or equivalent technical training preferred, including vocational/technical training in construction, carpentry, or building maintenance.
Experience working with commercial tools, equipment, building materials, and assisting with renovations, repairs, and facility improvement projects.
A minimum SURVIVAL level of sign language proficiency according to the AIDB evaluation system must be obtained within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.

Responsibilities

Perform skilled rough and finish carpentry work involving construction, renovation, repair, and maintenance of AIDB facilities.
Interpret and work from architectural drawings, blueprints, sketches, specifications, and project plans; perform accurate measurements, layouts, calculations, and material estimates.
Layout buildings, structures, foundations, walls, and other construction elements.
Construct, install, repair, and modify building components including walls, doors, frames, cabinets, shelving, countertops, trim, flooring, fixtures, and architectural finishes.
Frame structures and complete finishing work according to specifications; construct and install cabinets, shelving, millwork, and custom carpentry projects.
Install, repair, and finish drywall (including patching, sanding, and surface finishing), flooring materials, trim, Formica, countertops, and molding.
Perform comprehensive building maintenance and repair activities across interior and exterior building structures.
Repair and maintain doors, locks, hinges, hardware, roofs (including preventative maintenance), gutters, and related building components.
Complete concrete work including forming, pouring, finishing, and structural repairs.
Identify building concerns, recommend repair solutions, and perform preventative maintenance to keep assigned facilities in a safe, functional, and professional condition.
Plan, coordinate, and manage assigned construction and maintenance projects, organizing tools, materials, equipment, and resources.
Provide direction, instruction, and support to Carpenter Helpers, General Maintenance Workers, and other assigned personnel.
Monitor work progress, ensure project completion according to specifications and department standards, and communicate updates/timelines to supervisors.
Coordinate with other Physical Plant trades and external contractors as needed.
Safely operate, clean, inspect, and service woodworking equipment, power tools, hand tools, and construction equipment.
Follow all OSHA requirements, AIDB safety procedures, and departmental guidelines; ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Maintain a clean and organized work environment, reporting unsafe conditions or equipment issues promptly.
