About The Position

This is a temporary Carpenter position for a term of six months, working the second shift (10 am to 6 pm Monday – Thursday and 7 am to 3 pm Fridays). The role is within the Department of Facilities, under the general direction of the Working Foreman of the Building Division and the Building Operations Manager. The carpenter will perform skilled, rough, and finished carpentry work to construct, alter, repair, and maintain various items made of wood and similar materials. This includes renovation work, windows, glazing, door and lock installation, and general interior and exterior carpentry repairs. The position also involves performing other related duties for the building maintenance division, following established methods and procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma in vocational program
  • Three years of experience in maintenance and repair
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • Ability to do arithmetic computations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers and fractions
  • Ability to use measurement tools
  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools, materials of the trade, including the ability to use sandblasting equipment, and communication radio
  • Specific vision requirements include close to normal ranges for close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and normal depth perception; ability to distinguish color-coded materials and to adjust focus
  • A valid driver’s license is required

Responsibilities

  • Conduct necessary measuring, squaring, sawing, fitting, sanding, painting, nailing, and other activities to construct or build, assemble, repair, modify, renovate, and maintain partitions, doors, windows, floors, furniture, building framework, roof repairs, and other items.
  • Work from drawings, plans, ideas, and concepts to design, build, and construct bookcases, storage and other shelves, counters, partitions, cabinets, fences, furniture, other wooden articles, and complete small masonry repairs.
  • Install doors and locks, windows, closures, screens, and associated hardware; install floors, desktops, sinks, counter and bathroom fixture tops, fences, shades, blinds, and ceilings.
  • As required, repair damaged furniture, lockers, and replace or repair parts.
  • Install and replace damaged ceiling, wall, floor, and carpeting tiles.
  • Make general repairs to roofs.
  • As scheduled or as necessitated by emergency situations, make building interior and exterior repairs.
  • Operate hand and power tools and woodworking equipment to cut and fashion parts and materials, fixtures, and other wooden articles; operate sandblasting equipment.
  • Conduct regular, scheduled, emergency, and preventative maintenance.
  • Participate in building renovations.
  • Compile lumber and other stock and materials lists and maintain adequate inventory levels.
  • Maintain established quality and quantity standards.
  • Follow prescribed safety precautions, established department and Town policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Detect and report improper operations, faulty equipment, defective materials, and unusual conditions.
  • Maintain work areas and equipment in a clean, orderly, operational, and safe condition.
  • Maintain records of work performed.
  • In emergency situations, may be required to assist in snow removal.
  • Upon request, may assist other trades personnel as needed.
  • May serve as a lead worker over lower-level maintenance workers.
  • Provide back-up coverage as needed.
  • Respond to emergency calls at night and on weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Perform related duties as required.
