About The Position

The Massachusetts Veterans Home at Chelsea is seeking a motivated and skilled Carpenter I to join our Facilities Management team. In this role, you will perform skilled carpentry work, preventative maintenance, repairs, and renovations to help maintain a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment for our veteran residents. The ideal candidate is dependable, detail-oriented, and able to work both independently and collaboratively. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and a commitment to quality workmanship and customer service are essential. Through your work, you will play an important role in supporting the safety, comfort, and quality of life of the veterans we proudly serve.

Requirements

  • At least two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in carpentry, woodworking or cabinet-making work, or any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
  • A criminal background check will be completed on the recommended candidate as required by the regulations set forth by the Executive Office of Health and Human Services prior to the candidate being hired.
  • Education, licensure and certifications will be verified in accordance with the Human Resources Division’s Hiring Guidelines.

Nice To Haves

  • A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, technical or vocational school, at high school level or higher, with a major in carpentry, woodworking or cabinetmaking may be substituted for the required experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled carpentry work to construct, install, maintain, alter, and repair building structures and fixtures, including walls, floors, ceilings, doors, windows, roofs, ramps, railings, shelving, and related components.
  • Inspect facilities to identify repair and maintenance needs; estimate labor, materials, costs, and project timelines.
  • Read, interpret, and prepare sketches, blueprints, layouts, and work plans to complete carpentry projects accurately and efficiently.
  • Perform structural repairs, renovations, and improvement projects, including framing, drywall installation and repair, ceiling work, surface preparation, and finish carpentry.
  • Collaborate with supervisors, department managers, and other trades personnel to prioritize work, respond to maintenance needs, coordinate projects, and address emergency repair situations.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and ensure all work is performed in accordance with applicable building codes, safety standards, and facility policies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
