About The Position

Assist journeyman in planning, lay-out and installing forms, rebar, embeds and anchor bolts for installation of concrete structures in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes and industry standards. This role involves constructing built-in-place or prefabricated wooden forms, erecting forms, inserting spreaders and tie-rods, and anchoring and bracing forms. The helper will also build wooden structures like scaffold supports and frame shelters, assist in pouring and finishing concrete, and remove rough spots or patch holes in concrete surfaces. The position requires participation in all safety-related processes and programs, engaging with the work team to ensure zero injuries, reporting hazards and accidents, and understanding safety procedures like lockout/tag out. Effective communication, mathematical skills, and the ability to coordinate work with other crafts are essential. The role also includes assisting in planning and laying out work, observing installed equipment, examining field conditions, and potentially operating and maintaining construction equipment if certified.

Requirements

At least 1 year of experience working in the carpenter craft or similar craft as a helper or a combination of work experience and training.
Working knowledge of the carpenter craft.
Developing knowledge of industrial carpenter's craft including fabrication and erection of forms (i.e. Symons); fabrication and placement of rebar including proper tying techniques; and placing, finishing and sealing concrete.
Ability to understand and follow directions.
Must have all necessary tools (see Carpenter Helper Tool List).
Must be at least 18 years of age.

Responsibilities

Use appropriate hand and power tools to properly measure, cut, assemble and install forms, rebar, embeds and anchor bolts.
Construct built-in-place or prefabricated wooden forms, according to specifications for molding concrete structures.
Erect built-in-place forms or assemble and install prefabricated forms.
Insert spreaders and tie-rods between opposite pieces to maintain specific dimensions.
Anchor and brace forms to fixed objects using nails, bolts, anchor rods, steel cables, planks and timber.
Build wooden structures such as scaffold supports and supports, and frame shelters according to specifications and project specifications.
Help pour concrete into finished forms to specified textures; vibrate, level, smooth and shape surface of concrete; finish concrete surfaces to specifications.
Remove rough or defective spots from concrete surfaces using power grinder or chisel and hammer and patch holes with fresh concrete or epoxy compound.
Install all other items in accordance with the applicable plans and specifications.
Participate in all safety related processes and programs as requested.
Engage with your work team to ensure we achieve zero injuries.

Watch for hazards and report any concerns to your supervisor or safety professional.
If needed, use your stop work authority until the issue is resolved.
Report all accidents and near misses to supervisor; participate in investigation process as needed.
Participate in all pre-job work planning and safety discussions; Identify safety hazards you or other employees may be subject to and take all necessary corrective action to eliminate and/or mitigate hazards.
Understand and respond appropriately to all safety hazards and warning devices.
Understand, support, and follow lockout/tag out procedures.
Attend site specific training and assure you follow all procedures as out lined in training.
Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
Use effective verbal and written communication skills.
Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers and fractions rapidly and accurately.

Visualize two dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
With regard to that portion of the work assigned, assist in planning, installing and/or repair structures in accordance with those plans and specifications.
Assist journeymen in laying out work and learn to perform layout independently.
Learn to observe functioning of installed equipment or systems to determine hazards and need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement.
Notify supervision of any hazards observed and utilize safety stop work authority as needed.
Examine/inspect field conditions and identify problems, inaccuracies, and cost saving measures that arise or that may be encountered.
Take corrective actions as needed reporting any issues to your supervision.
If certified to operate equipment ensure that construction equipment is correctly operated, maintained, in good working order, and Daily Equipment Inspections are completed for equipment being utilized.
