About The Position

This role assists a journeyman in planning, laying out, and installing forms, rebar, embeds, and anchor bolts for concrete structures according to plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards. Overland Contracting Inc. is seeking individuals to join their team for this full-time Craft (non-union) opportunity.

Requirements

  • Experience working in the carpenter craft or a similar craft as a helper or laborer.
  • Basic knowledge of the carpenter craft.
  • Developing knowledge of industrial carpenter's craft including fabrication and erection of forms (e.g., Symons).
  • Developing knowledge of fabrication and placement of rebar including proper tying techniques.
  • Developing knowledge of placing, finishing, and sealing concrete.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Must possess all necessary tools (see Carpenter Helper Tool list).
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (criminal/civil background check, drug screen, motor vehicle records search).

Responsibilities

  • Use appropriate hand and power tools to measure, cut, assemble, and install forms, rebar, embeds, and anchor bolts.
  • Construct built-in-place or prefabricated wooden forms for molding concrete structures.
  • Erect built-in-place forms or assemble and install prefabricated forms.
  • Insert spreaders and tie-rods between form pieces to maintain specific dimensions.
  • Anchor and brace forms using nails, bolts, anchor rods, steel cables, planks, and timber.
  • Build wooden structures such as scaffold supports and frame shelters.
  • Assist in pouring concrete into finished forms, vibrating, leveling, smoothing, and shaping the surface.
  • Finish concrete surfaces to specifications.
  • Remove rough or defective spots from concrete surfaces and patch holes.
  • Install all other items in accordance with applicable plans and specifications.
  • Participate in all safety-related processes and programs, engaging with the work team to achieve zero injuries.
  • Understand that safety is paramount and no job is so important that safety will be compromised.
  • Watch for hazards and report any concerns to a supervisor or safety professional.
  • Use stop work authority if needed until an issue is resolved.
  • Report all accidents and near misses and participate in the investigation process.
  • Participate in pre-job work planning and safety discussions.
  • Identify safety hazards and take corrective action.
  • Understand and respond appropriately to all safety hazards and warning devices.
  • Understand, support, and follow lockout/tag out procedures.
  • Attend site-specific training and follow all outlined procedures.
  • Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Use effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Perform rapid and accurate addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers and fractions.
  • Listen to co-workers' suggestions, safety concerns, and recommendations.
  • Coordinate work with other crafts and co-workers.
  • Actively participate in on-the-job training and mentoring opportunities.
  • Produce quality work meeting requirements of plans, specifications, and industry standards.
  • Learn to read and understand plans and specifications.
  • Visualize two-dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
  • Assist in planning, installing, and/or repairing structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Assist journeymen in laying out work and learn to perform layout independently.
  • Learn to observe functioning of installed equipment or systems to determine hazards and need for adjustments.
  • Notify supervision of any hazards observed and utilize safety stop work authority.
  • Examine/inspect field conditions and identify problems, inaccuracies, and cost-saving measures.
  • Take corrective actions as needed and report issues to supervision.
  • Ensure construction equipment is correctly operated, maintained, in good working order, and Daily Equipment Inspections are completed if certified to operate equipment.
