About The Position

Provides engaging orientation and instruction to center life, administers tests, and evaluates student progress in the Career Preparation Period. This role involves managing the classroom, coordinating with staff, and providing various types of training to students. The specialist will also model appropriate behaviors, mentor students, and monitor their conduct. Additionally, the role includes assisting with student orientation by searching property upon entry to the center. This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive, and employees may perform other related duties as needed.

Requirements

  • Possesses strong oral and written communication skills
  • High energy level and ability to engage students
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective instructional strategies, classroom management, and content field
  • Ability to quickly learn Job Corps methodologies and strategies
  • Ability to use different methods and media in delivering course material
  • Ability to effectively respond to student issues as they arise
  • Proficient using common computer software including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Must possess a valid New York State Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in social services or a related field preferred
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the degree requirements on a year-to-year basis.
  • One-year related experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provides appropriate, intellectually stimulating instruction that supports the introduction to center life, academic and career skills training, and the placement of students in each class, taking into account each student's unique abilities.
  • Identifies, selects, and modifies instructional resources to meet the needs of the students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs.
  • Manages the classroom by moving around the room to tutor, coach, evaluate, and assist each student as needed.
  • Coordinates with independent living advisors, counselors, and other staff as necessary to resolve issues affecting student training.
  • Provides employability, social skills, diversity, and conflict resolution training to students.
  • Models appropriate behaviors, mentors students, and monitors both positive and negative behaviors through interventions.
  • Monitors classroom operations in terms of absenteeism, tardiness, etc.
  • Assists in student orientation by searching students’ property upon entry to the center.
