About The Position

This role serves as an introduction to potential careers for high school students within a specific department/program. It is designed for high school students who wish to gain practical experience in a professional work environment. The position offers the opportunity to develop valuable workplace skills, explore potential career paths, and contribute to the overall success of the department/program. The work for James McGrath in the McGrath lab will focus on research projects related to the TraCe and LOMP Centers, including running experiments and performing data analysis. This is for non-credit bearing experiences. This position can only be held while the student is in high school; once they graduate, they will need to move to an appropriate job code or be separated.

Requirements

  • Positive attitude and strong work ethic required
  • Employee must meet all NYS and Federal regulations to work as a minor including working papers (if applicable based on age) upon hire required

Responsibilities

  • Assist with daily operations and administrative tasks, including inventory distribution of microfluidics components to TraCe users and logging new inventory into the lab system.
  • Participate in team meetings and assist with project coordination, including developing project outlines and timelines for microplastics research, and presenting experimental findings.
  • Develop communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills by proposing experimental conditions and project direction, organizing and analyzing data, and solving problems with experimental set-ups.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to company policies and procedures, including maintaining a lab notebook and sharing findings only with authorized personnel.
  • Provide support for special projects as needed, such as running or maintaining experiments when lab members are unable, within the scope of the student's training.
  • Other duties as assigned.
