About The Position

The Career Development Specialist provides individualized advising, guidance, and support to employees seeking to advance their careers, strengthen their professional skills, and navigate internal career opportunities. This role delivers one-on-one career advising, creates and curates professional development resources, supports workshop and program development, and helps connect employees with opportunities aligned to their interests and experience. This role also contributes to broader organizational initiatives such as Professional Development Week, ad-hoc workshops, newsletter content, and ongoing maintenance of the Career Advancement SharePoint portal. This is a term position anticipated to be needed through Fall 2028 but may be ended or extended based on organizational needs, funding availability, and performance.

Requirements

  • Approximately 5-8 years of experience providing career advising, coaching, or related support in a higher education, healthcare, HR, or workforce development setting.
  • Strong knowledge of résumé writing, interviewing skills, and job search strategies.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and active-listening skills.
  • High degree of professionalism, discretion, and customer-service orientation.
  • Strong writing skills and comfort drafting articles, resource guides, or communications.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work both independently and collaboratively.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in career services, talent development, or internal mobility initiatives.
  • Familiarity with career assessments, competency models, or professional development frameworks.
  • Knowledge of SharePoint or similar content management systems.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct one-on-one advising sessions focused on career planning, skill development, and pathways for advancement.
  • Provide tailored feedback on résumés, CVs, and cover letters.
  • Coach employees on interviewing, networking, portfolio development, and articulating their value.
  • Assist employees in identifying internal and external opportunities aligned with their goals.
  • Maintain regular follow-up with advisees to track progress and support next steps in their development journey.
  • Gather and curate professional development tools, articles, workshops, and learning pathways.
  • Develop and update guides, templates, checklists, and job-search tools.
  • Identify resources tailored to specific career stages, disciplines, and advancement goals.
  • Support the creation and delivery of workshops, training sessions, and career-related learning experiences.
  • Assist in designing presentation materials, activities, and follow-up tools that enhance participant engagement.
  • Analyze feedback to continuously improve offerings and ensure alignment with employee needs.
  • Contribute to planning and preparing materials, communications, and resources for Professional Development Week.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to coordinate logistics, sessions, and event details.
  • Support promotional efforts and gather participation data.
  • Review internal job openings and share opportunities with employees as appropriate.
  • Prepare candidate highlights or summaries for hiring teams when applicable.
  • Draft articles or spotlights for newsletters and other communication channels.
  • Maintain and update the Career Development SharePoint portal, ensuring it is user-friendly, accurate, and engaging.
  • Upload and organize resources, event details, and program materials.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of advising sessions, follow-ups, and resources shared.
  • Support the overall operations of the Career Development function as needed.
