About The Position
The ACT/OTP Counselor is responsible for counseling students in all aspects of center life, e.g. personal and social development, vocational and educational training. This role monitors students’ progress, performance, and attendance for off-center trades, and obtains necessary records and reports from these sites. The counselor assesses and evaluates students continuously on both formal and informal levels, providing assistance with continuing education, additional training, and connecting with community services for successful transition from school to work. Additionally, the role assists students in setting goals, identifying strengths and career challenges, and resolving personal issues affecting career readiness. The counselor submits written student reports/evaluations as needed to outside agencies, referrals to Mental Health Consultant, Review Boards, or at the Center Director’s request. The position also monitors each class on a weekly basis, conferring with instructors, counselors, and administrators as appropriate. Job Corps is the largest nationwide residential career training program in the country and has been operating for more than 60 years. The program helps eligible young people ages 16 through 24 complete their high school education, trains them for meaningful careers, and assists them with obtaining employment.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree, including 15 semester hours of Social Sciences or related area required.
- One-year experience in a counseling capacity or related field.
- Valid State driver’s license in the state of employment with acceptable driving record preferred.
- Required to pass a drug screen in compliance with our Substance Abuse and Drug-Free Workplace policy.
- Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a nationwide criminal background check.
Responsibilities
- Counseling students in all aspects of center life, e.g. personal and social development, vocational and educational training.

- Obtaining Training Achievement Records and Progress and Performance Reports from Off-center training sites.
- Assessing and evaluating continuously those students assigned to them on both formal and informal levels.
- Provide assistance to students in continuing their education or entering into additional training; and in connecting with community services necessary for successful transition from school to work.
- Assisting students in setting short and long-term goals, identifying strengths and career challenges and resolution of personal issues affecting career readiness.
- Submitting written student reports/evaluations as needed to outside agencies, referrals to Mental Health Consultant, Review Boards, or at the Center Director’s request.
- Monitoring each class on a weekly basis, conferring with instructors, counselors, and administrators as appropriate.
