About The Position

This position supports the Idaho National Guard Career Assistance Program as a Career Assistance Specialist. The Career Assistance Specialist establishes and runs the Idaho National Guard Career Assistance Program, helping Idaho Guardsmen beat unemployment and underemployment. You will be the program: counseling Service Members one-on-one, teaching workshops, translating military skills into civilian terms, building employer networks across Idaho, and proving results with data. You will work on Gowen Field alongside the IDNG J9 Service Member and Family Support Branch and travel statewide to reach members where they live.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required in Human Resources, Counseling, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Demonstrable experience in career counseling, resume development, and interview coaching
  • Military connection required: prior or current military service, member of a military family, or service as a military family volunteer
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences
  • Valid state driver's license and a personally owned vehicle (program mileage reimbursed per the Joint Travel Regulation)
  • Ability to travel up to 20% on average, including occasional out-of-state travel for training and course support
  • Schedule flexibility, including occasional weekend work tied to National Guard drill schedules and mobilization events
  • U.S. citizenship or work authorization is sufficient for a favorable Tier 1 background investigation and Common Access Card (CAC) issuance

Nice To Haves

  • Professional certification in career counseling (CCC, GCDF, CPCC, or equivalent); KSA supports certification through its employee development program
  • One year or more working with military personnel or veterans in a career-advisory capacity (transition assistance, education services, veteran employment programs)
  • Familiarity with the Idaho employment landscape, workforce agencies, and veteran service organizations
  • Experience with National Guard or Reserve component culture and battle rhythm

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one career counseling to Service Members, in person and by phone, including workforce triage, individual development plans, progress notes, and follow-up through job placement and beyond
  • Plan, schedule, and facilitate at least one course or workshop per month (two hours to one day) covering resume development, interview skills, job search strategy, and related topics
  • Translate military occupational skills, training, and experience into civilian resumes, credentials, and career pathways
  • Build and maintain relationships with employers, state agencies, apprenticeship programs, education providers, and community organizations across Idaho to generate opportunities in members' home areas
  • Develop and maintain evidence-based curriculum, instructor guides, handouts, videos, and social media content
  • Manage the program master calendar, online event registration (Microsoft Forms), rosters, after-action reports, and pre- and post-event surveys (Microsoft Teams)
  • Maintain accurate program records and data files; deliver monthly reports by the first of each month; support development of program measures of effectiveness
  • Advise the J9 on program growth, cognitive enhancement programming, and expansion recommendations
