About The Position

The University of Mississippi, also known as Ole Miss, is a leading public research institution dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where students, faculty, and staff can thrive. The Career Center is seeking a Career Advisor to guide students in their career planning, develop recruitment communication strategies, and build professional networks to connect students and programs with employers. The role involves advising students on career aspirations, exploring options, discussing job and internship opportunities, reviewing resumes, administering career assessments, conducting mock interviews, and coaching on employment research. Career Advisors also facilitate workshops on job searching, LinkedIn, and major selection, and must be knowledgeable about industry trends. Building employer connections through emails, calls, and events is crucial. Responsibilities include developing new programs, updating resources, analyzing data for service improvement, and preparing/teaching a Career and Life Planning course with interactive activities and grading. Flexibility is key due to the varied nature of the work, including potential after-hours workshops or events. Success is measured by client relations, team collaboration, meeting metrics, positive evaluations, and personal growth in skills and innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Counsels and advises students and recent alumni individually and in groups about career exploration, self-assessment, and career decisions.
  • Serves as the main point of contact for prospective employers providing advice and information about recruitment, engagement and hiring students, and addressing employer needs.
  • Provides students information about career planning and employment opportunities and coaches students through the recruiting process.
  • Schedules logistics and secures resources for on-campus recruiting activities.
  • Delivers presentations and workshops for academic departments and student organizations to increase student interest in employee recruiting programs.
  • Experience providing one-on-one, group, and educational advising.
  • Ability to assist students with career planning, decision-making, goal-setting, job search strategies, researching, and graduate admissions processes.
  • Strong oral and written communication abilities for advising, workshops and presentations, and creating career materials.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication to connect and work with diverse student populations, employers, alumni, faculty, staff and other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Program development and planning expertise to create and execute workshops, presentations, and career related events.
  • Ability to manage and supervise working learners and volunteers effectively to coordinate career services activities.
  • Familiarity with student- and career development models, theories, best practices and assessment tools; ability to apply these frameworks effectively in advising and teaching roles.
  • Knowledge of career services software products and computer technologies to prepare presentations, data analysis, reports, and correspondence.
  • Proficiency in creating employment correspondence and other professional documents.
  • Competence in completing reports, correspondence and conducting research projects.
  • Ability to design and deliver an engaging Career and Life Planning course with experience in curriculum development, teaching, and fostering an interactive learning environment.
  • Additional relevant skills include cultural competence, teamwork and collaboration, flexibility, adaptability to changes in policy and schedules and new technology, and the capacity to balance advising, teaching, and program development responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate a passion for student development and experiential learning.
