About The Position

The new Neurology/Neurosurgery Care Unit (NNCU) located in the University of Oklahoma Medical Center, Tower B, 2 East, is now seeing patients! This unit features significant patient room upgrades, and care for a mixture of med/surg and stepdown patients. This comprehensive unit provides elevated care to some of OU Health's most complex patients, encouraging team-based care and easier access to services. Our unit focuses on all things Neuro! Our patient population includes diagnosis of strokes, seizures, brain mass, and neck and spinal surgery. This unit specializes in 24-7 epilepsy monitoring, where patients are being closely monitored and observed for any seizure activity. We will provide you the necessary tools in successfully performing a Yale swallow screening and becoming NIHSS certified (National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification). OU Health has introduced a groundbreaking hybrid nursing model that integrates both virtual and in-person nursing teams, aimed at improving care coordination and bolstering the nursing workforce within the state's premier academic health system. Under general supervision of a registered nurse, performs routine tasks in patient care.

Requirements

  • HS Diploma or GED.
  • No experience.
  • Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire.
  • Knowledge of basic nursing techniques and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relations with others.

Nice To Haves

  • This position may be filled as a Clinical Support Assistant (CSA) or Care Team Associate Level 1, 2, or 3, depending on individual experience, certifications, education, and other qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision of the RN and in collaboration with the patient and family, systematically and continually monitors the patient’s health status and implements the plan of care.
  • Carries out physician and nursing orders as directed by the RN that is within scope.
  • Takes/records blood pressures, temperatures, pulse and weighs patients.
  • Performs blood glucose monitoring.
  • Sets up and discontinues telemetry monitor.
  • Collects specimens as directed.
  • Applies sterile dressings, removal of sutures, staples and/or drains.
  • Performs all sterile procedures as assigned.
  • Performs stomal irrigation and applies colostomy pouches.
  • Performs oral suctioning.
  • Takes emergency action as needed and within scope.
  • Performs all treatments and procedures as defined on initial skills checklist.
  • Reports symptoms and significant changes in patient’s condition or behavior to RN.
  • Assists with admission, discharge and transfer process.
  • Transports patients to and from various treatment centers when necessary; assists transporters in moving patients in and out of stretchers and wheelchairs.
  • Keeps the patient’s room in clean and orderly condition; makes beds, replaces soiled linen.
  • Assists in restocking rooms with supplies and equipment as directed.
  • When assigned to one patient as a safety attendant, provides care, observes the patient and does not leave the patient alone.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
