Summary: Under direction of the surgeon in the Operating Room and according to established procedures, works as an integral part of the Cardiovascular and surgical team. Possesses knowledge of aseptic techniques and applies this while participating in surgical procedures. Assists in the provision of care to patients of all age groups. Is able to adequately perform all surgical and non-surgical duties, including, but not limited to essential job functions for the CSA.

Requirements

  • Must possess level of knowledge of surgical techniques and procedures acquired through completion of a physician’s assistant or surgical assistant program or completion of RNFA program.
  • Must be Certified in their field (PA, CRNFA, CSA/CSFA)
  • Must maintain cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.
  • ACLS certification
  • 2 years experience in Cardiovascular Surgery
  • Knowledge of basic sciences, such as human anatomy and physiology, microbiology, etc.
  • Must demonstrate competency in expanded CVSA role.
  • Analytical skills to accurately and efficiently set up operating room supplies and equipment and to assist in evaluation of new supplies and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates understanding and knowledge in reading Cardiac Cath films and additional studies.
  • Demonstrates understanding and has technical skill to: harvest quality vein, endoscopically and open; harvest radial arteries safely and effectively; and closure of surgical wounds.
  • Utilizes appropriate techniques to assist with homeostasis by clamping, cauterizing vessels or tissue, tying or ligating clamped vessels or tissue, applying hemostatic clips, or placing local hemostatic agents.
  • Gives ongoing instructions and/or explanations during patient’s surgical intervention.
  • Provides learning opportunities for others such as new employees, students, and co-workers.
  • Orients, instructs, and trains assigned personnel.
  • Assures proper visualization of the operative site with the appropriate placement and securing of retractors, packing of sponges in addition to suctioning, irrigating and sponging.
  • Assists with proper positioning of the patient.
  • Assures that points of pressure are padded, circulation is not impaired, and nerve damage is guarded against.
  • Monitors and restocks supplies. Ensure adequate stock of supplies and proper function of equipment.
  • Applies dressings and prepares the OR for the next case.
  • Properly accounts for sponges, needles, and instruments before, during, and after surgery.
  • Assists with cleaning instruments/endoscopes and setting up trays.
  • Assures proper patient identification and correct site surgery by participating in “time-out” and not passing scalpel or starting procedure until time-out is completed in collaboration with the RN circulator.
  • Demonstrates understanding and has technical skills to perform second assist activities during cardiovascular and thoracic procedures.
