About The Position

The Nurse Extern is an unlicensed nursing student role for candidates enrolled in an accredited nursing program and within one year of graduation. Under the direct supervision of a designated licensed registered nurse, the extern expands their clinical experience through competency assessment and a variety of patient-care activities, including training, participation in care planning and implementation, observation and evaluation, and identification and reporting of significant observations. The position is not permanent; employment is affected by criteria in the Nurse Program policy. The goal is for the extern to continue in the selected unit as a new graduate after graduation and obtaining an RN license. The extern may practice skills for which they have received didactic and clinical instruction and demonstrated competency under direct supervision. Activities may include patient assessment, medication administration, adjusting IV pump rates or devices, managing parenteral fluids, blood products or IV flushes, initiating, titrating and discontinuing oxygen, and basic data collection in an EMR. Externs may also spend time with a clinical case manager, observe procedures, or participate in activities relevant to their patient population. Banner Thunderbird Medical Center is described as a West Valley Level I adult trauma and tertiary-care destination serving all ages. Its services include surgical, oncological, cardiovascular, neuroscience, orthopedic, pediatric, and women and infant care. The campus has more than 3,000 employees.
