The Cardiothoracic Surgery Nurse Practitioner will function as a vital member of a high-volume surgical service, working directly with multiple attending surgeons across a major hospital network. Focused entirely on first assisting, the ideal candidate is an experienced, technically strong NP who thrives in a fast-paced OR environment. You must be comfortable adapting to various surgeon preferences and be highly motivated by a blend of clinical excellence and productivity-based compensation.

Requirements

  • 1–2+ years of dedicated Cardiac Surgery experience as a Nurse Practitioner (CABG, valves, thoracic, or transplant).
  • Experience in a high-volume cardiac program is strongly preferred.
  • Prior exposure to transplant or congenital cardiac surgery is a plus, but not required.
  • Highly proficient in Endoscopic Vein Harvesting (EVH) using the Maquet system, with consistent harvest times in the 30–45 minute range.
  • Ability to function confidently as first or second assist in: Adult cardiac surgery, Thoracic surgery (open, VATS, robotic), Transplant surgery (heart, lung, kidney)
  • Willingness to cross-train into congenital cardiac surgery if desired.
  • Adaptable and collaborative, able to work with multiple surgeons who each have unique preferences and styles.
  • Calm, steady, and reliable in high-acuity or rapidly changing situations.
  • Strong communication skills with surgeons, anesthesia, ICU teams, and nursing staff.
  • High degree of intellectual curiosity and commitment to ongoing learning, especially if pursuing transplant or congenital training.
  • Active Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license in the United States.
  • National certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP or ACNP).
  • RNFA (Registered Nurse First Assistant) certification is required/strongly preferred for OR billing and privileges.
  • Ability to obtain Texas licensure; expedited temporary privileges available.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a high-volume cardiac program is strongly preferred.
  • Prior exposure to transplant or congenital cardiac surgery is a plus, but not required.
  • RNFA (Registered Nurse First Assistant) certification is required/strongly preferred for OR billing and privileges.

Responsibilities

  • Intraoperative First and Second Assist
  • Adult Cardiac: First or second assist for CABG, valve repairs and replacements, and complex aortic and vascular procedures.
  • Thoracic & Transplant: Assist in open, minimally invasive, and robotic thoracic cases, as well as heart, lung, and kidney transplants.
  • Congenital Track (Optional): Assist in complex pediatric procedures (e.g., VSD/ASD, Norwood); requires ongoing self-study in congenital anatomy.
  • Endoscopic Vein Harvesting (EVH): Efficiently perform EVH via the Maquet system to deliver high-quality, low-trauma conduit while ensuring smooth OR case flow.
