The Department of Surgery at the University of North Carolina is seeking an experienced, board-certified, full-time academic cardiac surgeon to join their Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. This individual will serve as the system-wide clinical and strategic leader for Cardiac Surgery within the UNC Health Heart & Vascular Service Line (HVSL). The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is one of nine clinical divisions in the Department of Surgery and currently includes 10 faculty members across three sections: adult cardiac surgery, congenital cardiac surgery, and thoracic surgery. The Section of Adult Cardiac Surgery provides comprehensive clinical services for the full spectrum of cardiac surgery, including adult cardiac surgery, cardiac transplantation, and mechanical circulatory support. Responsibilities include the surgical management of heart failure, cardiac transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, aortic and coronary artery surgery, and the surgical and transcatheter management of valvular disease. Additionally, the role involves teaching residents and students and conducting research appropriate for academic rank. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to the educational mission and possess a collaborative attitude within a multidisciplinary team. This position functions at a peer level with other HVSL clinical domain leaders, driving coordinated, high-quality, and growth-oriented cardiac surgical services across the statewide UNC Health system, which comprises 20 hospitals. Under the direction of the System HVSL dyad, the incumbent will lead strategy development, clinical integration, quality performance, workforce planning, and program growth to ensure excellence in cardiac surgery outcomes and access. Key responsibilities encompass system leadership and strategy, clinical integration and program alignment, quality and performance, growth, access, and outreach, workforce and talent management, and capital and resource planning. This position is recruited as an open-rank, open-track appointment with an FTE between 0.5 and 1.0. The appointment may be offered as a fixed-term or tenure-track position. The faculty member will be expected to fulfill clinical and research duties, along with academic responsibilities. Exceptional candidates may be considered for leadership roles within the Department of Surgery or the Heart and Vascular Service Line, subject to current needs.
