This is a 68-bed cardiac step-down unit that provides an intermediate level of care to patients with cardiac-related diagnoses such as coronary artery disease (CAD), congestive heart failure (CHF), myocardial infarction (MI), and heart arrhythmias like atrial fibrillation (A-fib) and ventricular tachycardia (V-Tach). The unit also provides pre and post-procedure care for patients undergoing cardiac procedures such as catheterization/angioplasty, stents, ablations, and placement of pacemakers and defibrillators. Nurses on this unit receive specialized training in arterial sheath removal and Tikosyn administration and are ACLS certified. All patients are continuously monitored by telemetry. The Royal Oak Hospital is recognized by U.S. News & World Report as the #2 hospital in Michigan and is a major academic and referral center with Level I adult and Level II pediatric trauma designations. It has earned Magnet designation four consecutive times and houses Michigan’s first Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence. The scope of work includes providing care to patients according to the plan of care, unit routine, and hospital policy under the direction of a Registered Nurse. This includes safe transport of patients via wheelchair or stretcher, dispatch services, and appropriate documentation. The role also involves acting as an Observer for patients requiring constant observation, performing general receptionist and clerical duties to facilitate efficient unit functioning, and documenting care provided in the electronic medical record.
