This role offers opportunities for career development and advancement for a Cardiac Sonographer I, II, III, or IV. The Cardiac Sonographer demonstrates proficiency by performing routine and emergency echocardiograms, including 2D, 3D, Doppler, Transesophageal, and Stress Echocardiograms, as requested by a physician and in accordance with established protocols. They record quality information while performing echocardiographic imaging and follow procedural guidelines. The sonographer explains procedures and possible side effects to patients or family members. They provide echocardiography services at all necessary locations, including portables, working variable shifts, weekends, and providing emergent call coverage as scheduled. The role involves operating equipment necessary for all required procedures and obtaining optimal diagnostic recordings, utilizing ancillary devices. Maintaining equipment in working order, making minor adjustments and repairs, performing routine cleaning, preventive maintenance, and reporting malfunctions to the echo lab manager are also key responsibilities. The sonographer analyzes patient medical records to obtain history and necessary information for diagnostic procedures, and prepares preliminary reports for Cardiologist review. They participate in quality improvement activities, evaluate procedure results for technical quality and accuracy, and maintain appropriate logs, files, and records. Reviewing department performance in relation to established goals and implementing changes to affect outcomes are expected. Maintaining confidentiality of patients, employees, and corporation-related activities is crucial. The sonographer may instruct students, fellows, nurses, or health personnel as requested and communicates technical and patient care related information according to established processes and timelines. Attending Echo Lab Meetings and participating in Echo-related conferences through attendance ensures continuing education and professional growth. The role requires working weekends, holidays, and on-call as needed, and cultivating a collaborative and cooperative work environment. Level 4 Cardiac Sonographers have additional expectations, including participating in dedicated research protocols, performing portable and lab echocardiograms in an inpatient setting on weekends, holidays, and on-call basis, acting as a resource in the absence of the leadership team, and actively participating in educational opportunities. They are expected to be a role model for other cardiac sonographers and have the ability to troubleshoot Cardiac Ultrasound equipment issues and EMR and Cardiac PAC system issues.
