This role performs echocardiography tests/procedures in accordance with the American Society of Echocardiography standards. The Cardiac Sonographer prepares patients for exams by explaining procedures, transferring patients to the ultrasound table, applying gel, and positioning patients properly. They operate ultrasound equipment to produce and record images of the motion, shape, and composition of blood, organs, tissues, or bodily masses. The position involves performing the echocardiogram and providing a preliminary summary of technical findings to the interpreting physician. The Cardiac Sonographer thoroughly understands the operation of the ultrasound machine and utilizes new sonographic technologies when needed. They perform routine cardiac ultrasound procedures in various settings including clinic, hospital, and mobile sites. The role requires professional interaction with fellow health care professionals and may assist in maintaining Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) accreditation. Additionally, the Cardiac Sonographer may supervise or train students and other cardiac sonographers. Adherence to safety, infection control, and HIPAA policies is mandatory. Depending on the facility, responsibilities may expand to include general ultrasonography.
