This position performs cardiac ultrasound procedures such as M-mode, 2-D, Doppler and Color Flow Doppler utilizing a variety of equipment and techniques. The Cardiac Sonographer makes the necessary measurements required for interpretation to obtain accurate, high-quality results. They may assist physicians in the Catheterization and Electrophysiology Labs by performing echocardiograph studies to aid them in proceeding with complex procedures to decrease risk factors. The role involves identifying and defining cardiac abnormalities and extending the scope of the examination appropriately. Patients are prepared for procedures, and clinical history is obtained, including cardiac-related physical findings and pertinent laboratory data, to adapt imaging techniques for comprehensive and diagnostic echocardiograms. The Cardiac Sonographer also assists in performing transesophageal studies with a cardiologist, calculating appropriate measurements and sterilizing probes. They communicate clinical findings to appropriate staff and record statistics, performing daily maintenance of the Echocardiography Lab and its equipment, reporting malfunctions as appropriate. This role requires the ability to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, demonstrating knowledge of growth and development principles and the ability to assess patient status and interpret information relative to age-specific needs.
