About The Position

Under general supervision, this role follows established policies, procedures, and professional guidelines. The Cardiac Monitor Technician is responsible for monitoring and identifying basic normal cardiac rhythms, dysrhythmias, and lethal arrhythmias. They report these findings to the appropriate personnel and are responsible for rhythm documentation and labeling per TGH policy. This role also promotes and maintains patient support, interprets and posts rhythm strips according to protocol, and performs 12-lead EKGs. Additionally, the technician maintains and cleans portable telemetry monitors between patient use according to manufacturer's guidelines. Essential functions include accurately interpreting changes in rhythms, recording rhythm strips as required, and demonstrating arrhythmia recognition skills. They communicate lethal arrhythmias to nursing staff and document strips as requested, ensuring alarms are maintained at all times with safely set rates to minimize false alarms. The technician identifies individual EKGs with proper patient identifiers, works with the computer system, and maintains patient flow through the ER, facilitating timely transfers, admissions, and discharges. They answer the telephone and intercom in a pleasant and professional manner, relaying messages accurately and quickly. The technician also reports any malfunction of monitoring equipment to the Biomedical Technicians, Charge Nurse, and Nursing Director.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED
Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association or American Red Cross
Basic EKG class and demonstration of competency through testing

Responsibilities

Monitoring and identifying basic normal cardiac rhythms, dysrhythmias, and lethal arrhythmias
Reporting identified cardiac rhythms to appropriate personnel
Documenting and labeling rhythms per TGH policy
Interpreting and posting rhythm strips according to protocol
Performing 12-lead EKGs
Maintaining and cleaning portable telemetry monitors between patient use
Accurately interpreting changes in rhythms
Recording rhythm strips as required
Demonstrating arrhythmia recognition skills
Communicating lethal arrhythmias to nursing staff
Documenting strips as requested
Maintaining alarms on at all times with rates set safely
Identifying individual EKGs with proper patient identifiers
Working with the computer system
Maintaining flow through the ER and facilitating transfers, admissions and discharges timely
Answering telephone and intercom in a pleasant and professional manner and relaying message accurately and quickly
Reporting any malfunction of monitoring equipment to the Biomedical Technicians, Charge Nurse, and Nursing Director
