About The Position

bp is hiring an experienced carbonate sedimentologist for its Sedimentology & Stratigraphy (SedStrat) Specialist Team, which provides technical expertise across bp’s global Exploration and Reservoir Development portfolio. This individual-contributor role calls for deep expertise in carbonate depositional systems, reservoir architecture, sedimentology, and reservoir quality, together with experience applying and integrating that expertise in subsurface projects to deliver business value. The successful candidate will serve as a recognized carbonate reservoir subject matter expert, lead and support studies across diverse carbonate settings, and demonstrate project management, communication, and influencing skills. The role involves integrating static and dynamic subsurface data with engineers and other disciplines; scoping and coordinating technical studies; supervising and verifying sedimentological, reservoir-quality, and integrated geology work; and advising on technical service priorities. It also includes coaching and mentoring, teaching and course development, technical presentations and publications, and participation in industry consortia and joint industry projects. The position is hybrid, based initially in Sunbury, London, with a planned move to Timber Square, London, around Q4 2027–Q1 2028. Up to 10% travel is expected, and the role is eligible for in-country relocation assistance.

Requirements

  • Minimum MSc degree in Geology; a PhD or equivalent experience is preferred.
  • Deep understanding of carbonate sedimentary rocks across depositional settings, including platform, ramp, reefal, slope, basinal, and lacustrine settings.
  • Strong understanding of carbonate facies analysis, depositional architecture, diagenesis, reservoir-quality evolution, high-resolution sequence stratigraphy, and stratigraphic frameworks.
  • Experience in carbonate reservoir management or production, and experience in at least one of exploration, appraisal, or early field development.
  • Ability to describe carbonate core and outcrops independently to a high standard, integrating sedimentology, textures, diagenesis, fractures, and reservoir-quality observations.
  • Ability to scope and coordinate reservoir description and characterization projects and deliver high-quality products that can be practically applied to subsurface problems.
  • Ability to organize and lead geological integrated field trips and core workshops, particularly those focused on carbonate systems and reservoir analogues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting to senior management and influencing vertically and horizontally in an organization.
  • Ability to support more than one team at pace, switch context, and pragmatically right-scope products.
  • Ability to generate multiple depositional, diagenetic, and stratigraphic scenarios and use static and dynamic fluid data to test, improve, and rank them.
  • Ability to describe subsurface uncertainty and risks and assess their impact on profile and resource delivery.
  • Skill in correlating wireline logs and integrating core, seismic, image logs, and dynamic data such as satellite logs, PLTs, and PBU data to generate geological models.
  • Good understanding of and ability to integrate with Petrophysics, Geophysics, and Reservoir Engineering.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD in Geology or equivalent experience.
  • At least 10 years of broad geological experience, ideally gained through assignments in different areas and basins and predominantly within carbonate systems.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary and multifunctional project teams and influencing others to provide quality inputs for team delivery.
  • Ability to organize and lead cross-team workshops and meetings.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as one of bp’s recognized carbonate reservoir subject matter experts.
  • Lead subsurface teams across bp in sedimentological and reservoir characterization studies across diverse carbonate settings globally.
  • Integrate static and dynamic subsurface data with engineers and other subsurface disciplines to identify value-generating opportunities.
  • Assist in framing and prioritizing technical service work.
  • Supervise and verify sedimentological, reservoir-quality, and integrated geology studies undertaken by the SedStrat specialist team and, where appropriate, by assets.
  • Contribute to management presentations and reports.
  • Coach and mentor colleagues in carbonate sedimentology and reservoir quality within areas of expertise.
  • Maintain and develop carbonate sedimentological and diagenetic expertise through reading, consortium workshops, and external conferences.
  • Build a strong technical reputation as a bp subject matter expert and, where appropriate, publish innovative technical work internally and externally.
  • Assist with or lead the teaching and development of bp courses with significant carbonate geology content.
  • Act as a focal point for carbonate-focused JIPs and consortia, ensuring bp gains maximum value from them.
  • Scope and coordinate reservoir description and characterization projects, including projects involving external contractors.
  • Describe carbonate core and outcrops and integrate observations of sedimentology, textures, diagenesis, fractures, and reservoir quality.
  • Organize and lead geological field trips and core workshops focused on carbonate systems and reservoir analogues.
  • Generate depositional, diagenetic, and stratigraphic scenarios; use static and dynamic fluid data to test, improve, and rank models.
  • Describe subsurface uncertainty and risks and assess their impact on profile and resource delivery.
  • Correlate wireline logs and integrate core, seismic, image-log, and dynamic data to generate geological models.
