About The Position

This is a promotional exam for current Alameda County employees who have completed at least six months of continuous service following a regular appointment. The Alameda County Sheriff's Office is a full-service law enforcement agency with a budget of approximately $600 million and over 1600 authorized positions. The Sheriff's Office is responsible for a wide range of duties including court security, coroner services, a criminalistics laboratory, civil process, county jail operations, emergency services, patrol and investigative services for unincorporated areas and contract cities, a basic academy, fish and game enforcement, and directing task forces. Captains are responsible for the command and administration of major line and staff sub-divisions, including substations, bureaus, detention facilities, contract law enforcement services, support services, emergency services, the regional training center, court services, or administrative roles reporting to the Sheriff/Undersheriff. They may also provide agency-wide oversight during off-hours.

Requirements

  • Qualified applicants must be current Alameda County employees.
  • Completed the equivalent of six months of continuous service following a regular appointment in the Alameda County classified service by Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
  • A regular appointment does not include provisional, TAP (Temporary Assignment Pool), or STEP-UP appointments.
  • The equivalent of one year of full time experience in the class of Lieutenant in the Alameda County classified service.
  • Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

Responsibilities

  • Command and administration of major line and staff sub-divisions.
  • Command and administer a substation, bureau, detention facility, single contract law enforcement services unit or multiple contract law enforcement services units, the support services unit, the Office of Emergency Services, the Regional Training Center, Court Services, or serve as an administrative captain assigned to the Sheriff/Undersheriff.
  • Provide agency-wide oversight and administration during hours and days of the week when the Sheriff, Undersheriff, Assistant Sheriff’s, Commanders and Captains are not regularly scheduled to work.
  • Perform related work as required.
