About The Position

This position contributes to the public safety mission by directing the daily activities of security supervisors and support staff as a shift commander in an institutional setting. The role involves coordinating and reviewing the work of others on the assigned shift to ensure a safe, secure, and productive environment. The Captain will lead, develop, and counsel staff, and is responsible for work schedules, duty rosters, and the performance management system for staff. This role also includes conducting ongoing inspections to ensure compliance with security post audits, policies, and procedures governing all aspects of institutional operations. The Captain will interact with management, staff, visitors, inmates, and the public to maintain orderly and secure operations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Operator’s License.
  • Current Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Certification.
  • Working knowledge of departmental policies, institutional policies, operating practices, procedures, and inmate programs.
  • Progressive security working experience within the Virginia Department of Corrections.
  • Experience in the supervision of corrections staff.
  • Experience planning, scheduling, and/or organizing work for others to include timekeeping and duty roster management.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of practices and procedures governing security and/or administration.
  • Demonstrated ability to receive, understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions.
  • Working knowledge in the use of firearms, radio equipment, physical control devices, electric and electronic controls.

Nice To Haves

  • LEAD Graduate or equivalent applicable experience or training.
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Microsoft Office Programs.
  • Knowledge and experience with Evidence Based Practices.
