About The Position

This position contributes to the public safety mission by directing daily activities of security supervisors and support staff as shift commander in an institutional setting. It coordinates and reviews the work of others on the assigned shift to ensure a safe, secure, and productive environment. The role involves leading, developing, and counseling staff, and is responsible for work schedules, duty rosters, and performance management systems for staff. The Captain conducts ongoing inspections to ensure compliance with security post audits, policies, and procedures governing all aspects of institutional operations. The role also interacts with management, staff, visitors, inmates, and the public to maintain orderly and secure operations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Operator’s License.
  • DCJS Certification.
  • Working knowledge of departmental policies, institutional policies, operating practices, procedures, and inmate programs.
  • Progressive security working experience within the Virginia Department of Corrections.
  • Experience in the supervision of corrections staff.
  • Experience planning, scheduling, and/or organizing work for others to include timekeeping and duty roster management.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of practices and procedures governing security and/or administration.
  • Ability to receive, understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions.
  • Working knowledge in the use of firearms, radio equipment, physical control devices, electric and electronic controls.

Nice To Haves

  • LEAD Graduate or equivalent applicable experience or training.
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Microsoft Office Programs.
  • Knowledge and experience with Evidence Based Practices.
