About The Position

The Canvasser conducts voter-registration, voter-education, civic-engagement, and voter-mobilization activities in assigned Latino communities. This field-based position visits neighborhoods, businesses, community locations, and public events to engage community members using approved scripts and materials. The Canvasser documents voter-contact results, securely handles voter-registration applications and community data, and follows all reporting and safety requirements.

Requirements

  • A specific degree is not required.
  • Previous canvassing, voter-registration, campaign, community-outreach, customer-service, organizing, sales, or other public-facing experience preferred.
  • Interest in civic participation and Latino community empowerment.
  • Strong interpersonal, listening, and communication skills.
  • Ability to learn and accurately communicate approved voter-registration and voter-education information.
  • Ability to follow scripts, turf assignments, reporting requirements, and safety procedures.
  • Dependable, punctual, organized, and attentive to detail.
  • Ability to remain professional during difficult or unexpected interactions.
  • Legible handwriting and accurate data-entry skills.
  • Ability to use a mobile phone, tablet, or canvassing application.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Professional proficiency in English and Spanish preferred.
  • Ability to work up to 30 hours per week, including daytime, evening, and Saturday schedules.
  • Ability to travel throughout assigned communities and field locations.
  • The employee must meet all eligibility, training, appointment, and certification requirements applicable to individuals who collect or submit voter-registration applications in the assigned jurisdiction.
  • Depending on applicable law, this may include being registered or eligible to register to vote.

Responsibilities

  • Canvass assigned neighborhoods, businesses, community locations, and public events.
  • Engage community members regarding voter registration, voter education, voting by mail, Get Out the Vote, and other approved civic-engagement initiatives.
  • Provide accurate information using only approved scripts, forms, literature, and digital tools.
  • Respect individuals who decline to participate or ask that outreach end.
  • Refer legal, media, complaint, or other complex questions to the Canvass Lead.
  • Provide voter-registration applications and approved assistance in accordance with applicable law and organizational procedures.
  • Review applications for apparent completeness without changing or completing an applicant’s information unless expressly permitted.
  • Protect voter-registration applications from loss, damage, alteration, or unauthorized disclosure.
  • Maintain required custody, tracking, storage, and submission records.
  • Return all completed, incomplete, spoiled, and unused applications according to established procedures and deadlines.
  • Never discard, withhold, falsify, improperly prefill, or alter a voter-registration application.
  • Never misrepresent a voter-registration application as a job application, petition, survey, or other document.
  • Report suspected voter-registration misconduct or form mishandling immediately.
  • Attend required training, shift briefings, safety reviews, and debriefings.
  • Follow assigned turf, schedules, goals, check-in procedures, and reporting requirements.
  • Accurately record doors knocked, contacts, registrations, commitments, responses, and other assigned metrics.
  • Enter information into VAN, MiniVAN, spreadsheets, mobile applications, or other approved systems.
  • Protect confidential voter, community-member, employee, and organizational information.
  • Follow all field, vehicle, weather, heat, emergency, and incident-response procedures.
  • Promptly report injuries, threats, harassment, accidents, law-enforcement interactions, or unsafe conditions.
  • Discontinue any interaction or leave any location that appears unsafe.
  • Maintain professional and respectful conduct with community members and coworkers.
  • Accurately record all hours worked and follow applicable meal, rest-period, scheduling, and attendance procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
