About The Position

Under general supervision from the Canine Care Center Supervisor or designee, this position is responsible for the care, feeding, and handling of dogs. This role involves direct animal care, cleaning, assisting with medical procedures, citizen interaction, and maintaining facilities. The position requires physical stamina and the ability to handle animals safely and effectively.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent OR any equivalent combination of experience, education, training and/or certification as determined by the employer.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers and fractions
  • Ability to read and understand written instruction and/or directions
  • Ability to follow verbal directions
  • Ability to work independently and effectively with supervisors, co-workers and volunteers
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patrons, volunteers, and staff
  • Ability to use animal handling equipment within a shelter environment, including specialized handling of dangerous dogs
  • Ability to control and move dogs weighing up to 150 pounds
  • Must be able to regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks daily
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 75 pounds
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 150 pounds with assistance
  • Must be able to walk, stand for long periods of time, bend, squat, and reach
  • Ability to demonstrate physical fitness; demonstrate agility (to move whole body quickly and easily); demonstrate dexterity (to use hands and/or feet skillfully
  • Must be able to distinguish between shades of color

  • Knowledgeable of dog behavior and breeds (May be learned after employed)

Responsibilities

  • Feed, water, walk and provide general care for dogs
  • Bathe dogs
  • Clean assigned kennel areas to provide a sanitary and disease-free environment
  • Assist in the euthanasia of dogs
  • Assist in the medical care and intake of dogs, as needed
  • Assist citizens in identifying their impounded dogs
  • Assist citizens in meeting adoptable dogs and doing dog-dog introductions as needed
  • Perform custodial duties in restrooms, offices and other non-kennel areas
  • Maintain equipment and grounds
  • Launder and provide clean dog bedding
  • Attend off-site adoption events
  • Assist with SAFER evaluations once trained
  • Update computerized kennel records as needed
  • Additional duties as assigned
