About The Position

The Campus Security Officer position at Norfolk State University is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of students, staff, and campus property. This role involves responding to emergencies, conducting patrols, enforcing safety regulations, and providing assistance to individuals in need. The officer must be able to handle complaints, monitor alarm systems, use good judgment, and interpret policies and procedures. A valid operator license is required for driving and operating a motor vehicle.

Requirements

  • Ability to receive and prioritize complaints.
  • Demonstrated ability to use computers and monitor various alarm systems.
  • Skilled in keyboarding.
  • Good command of the English language.
  • Ability to use good discretion and sound judgment when handling a situation.
  • Demonstrate the ability to interpret policies and procedures.
  • Must possess a valid operator license for driving/operating a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to work a schedule that may vary and include evenings, weekends, and holidays based on departmental needs.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and prioritize complaints.
  • Use computers and monitor various alarm systems.
  • Render assistance to injured or ill persons, including transport to health centers or hospitals and requesting rescue services.
  • Respond to fire alarms, locate fires, evacuate buildings if necessary, extinguish fires, and control traffic.
  • Conduct walking patrols of dormitories, ensuring safety regulations are enforced and interacting with students and staff.
  • Operate motor vehicles appropriately in patrolling duties.
  • Proactively patrol the campus to ensure off-campus students receive the same security and safety as on-campus students.
  • Respond to all emergency calls for service when requested by sworn officers.
  • Act independently and make decisions involving issues with potentially serious impact on the University and/or clients.
  • Conduct security patrols of all University buildings and grounds.
  • Check doors and windows to ensure they are secured, preventing unauthorized entry.
  • Observe and report all unsafe conditions, such as fire and structural hazards, lighting outages, and security violations.
  • Conduct money escorts from various University departments to and from the Bursar's office, ensuring safe transactions.
  • Perform regular tests of essential security systems, such as Emergency call boxes.
  • Enforce state, local, and University regulations.
  • Make written reports of all acts that violate the Student Code of Conduct, complaints, injured persons, and suspicious circumstances in a timely manner.
