About The Position

The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) is recruiting for a Campus Security Officer (CSO) for the University Police Department – Northern Command. The Campus Security Officer patrols and protects campus buildings and grounds. Positions may be assigned to any campus to include the University of Nevada, Reno, Truckee Meadows Community College, Desert Research Institute, and Western Nevada College. The CSO consistently follows directives and guidance from supervisors and adheres to procedures and guidelines for security or safety violations. The CSO enforces rules, regulations, and laws within the scope of their job duties and actively looks for violations of safety and security protocols, making corrections or noting issues. Security Officers provide security for State buildings and grounds, protective services to buildings and occupants, enforce applicable laws, rules, regulations, and policies, and apprehend offenders. They maintain the security of assigned buildings or facilities and surrounding property by conducting visual surveillance through direct observation, monitoring State property, displays, and individuals entering and leaving buildings, and taking appropriate action according to department policy. Patrols involve checking windows, locks, doors, and security systems for damage or possible breach of security, following established procedures and guidelines when security or safety violations occur. CSOs also assist with low-level criminal investigations by working directly with victims, witnesses, and involved individuals, which includes conducting interviews, gathering and documenting evidence, reviewing available information, and preparing detailed reports to assist officers and support follow-up investigations. The position requires strong communication skills, critical thinking, and the ability to apply logic and reasoning when evaluating incidents and working through past-tense crimes.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent education.
  • Two (2) years of experience in public contact work which included applying and implementing rules, regulations or established policies OR An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Submission to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances (as this position affects public safety).
  • Possession of a valid Class “C” driver’s license or higher operator’s license at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
  • Certification in CPR, first aid, AED, TASER, handcuffing, baton, and defensive tactics within the first 90 days of employment and as a condition of continuing employment.
  • Ability to perform extended periods of walking or standing.
  • Ability to work in exposure to inclement weather.
