About The Position

College security officers is a non-sworn position that assists College Police to ensure the safety of students, staff, and property through regular foot/vehicle/bike patrols, building access control, and incident response. This department is a 24/7 operation with staffing on all three shifts. Responsibilities include enforcing safety regulations, providing 24/7 security escorts, building lockouts and lockups, parking enforcement, preparing incident reports, reporting safety concerns and providing customer service. Will utilize Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) to properly log calls. May need to use the college’s mass notification RAVE system. This position is an entry point to pursuing a career in law enforcement/campus safety at Smith College. This is a casual, non-benefitted position.

Requirements

  • Frequently requires working nights, weekends, and holidays, along with the ability to walk for extended periods and stand for long durations.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills, with the ability to maintain composure during stressful, high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to operate radio systems, CAD software, and Microsoft Office.
  • Be able to attain DCJIS certification.
  • Must pass a thorough background check and possess a clean drivers’ history
  • Must be able to work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays as this position is for an on-call member (casual position with Smith College).
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous experience in public safety, security, or customer service.

Nice To Haves

  • EMD (Emergency Medical Dispatch) and APCO PST1 certifications, or the ability to obtain them is helpful.
  • College Degree in law enforcement/public safety
  • Good customer service skills
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, multi-tasked environment
  • CPR/1st Aid or ability to attain
  • CAD knowledge
  • DCJIS certification

Responsibilities

  • Patrolling campus grounds and buildings (residential, academic, and administrative) to identify safety hazards, unauthorized persons, or breaches of security.
  • Locking and unlocking buildings/rooms.
  • Responding to assist Police with fire alarms, medical emergencies and disturbances, often including administering first aid or CPR.
  • Preparing all types of incident reports.
  • Directing traffic, enforcing parking regulations, and assisting motorists.
  • Radio and alarm monitoring.
  • Handle walk-in requests for assistance at the police department.
