About The Position

The University Police Department at West Virginia University is seeking applications for a Community Safety Officer position to advance WVU’s commitment to our values of Service, Curiosity, Respect, Accountability, and Appreciation. WVU’s Police Department is a 24/7 community based, progressive agency that gives officers the flexibility to do good work for all faculty, staff, students and visitors. Community Safety Officers are non-sworn civilian officers who support the University by establishing and maintaining a safe atmosphere for the students, visitors, faculty and staff at West Virginia University by providing routine patrol of areas and being a first point of contact for public assistance.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 0-6 months of experience working with the public in some capacity.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
  • Ability to read and write in English and perform basic mathematical calculations as would be required in the completion of technical reports and professional police operations.
  • Ability to communicate with individuals at all levels within the organization and the general public in a clear and professional manner.
  • Ability to rapidly learn University and Department of Public Safety policies and procedures.
  • Must acquire and maintain a CPR certification.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform defensive tactics to protect self and others.
  • Ability to react quickly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to learn police practices and philosophies.
  • Physical capability to perform duties of position.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information and prepare reports.

Responsibilities

  • Provide proactive patrols of assigned area on campus to observe persons and property therein for the purpose of reducing and preventing criminal activities.
  • Checks buildings for security, being alert for situations of deficiencies that make WVU vulnerable to crime. Corrects or reports noted deficiencies.
  • Responds to routine and emergency calls and takes appropriate action to support Campus Police Officers.
  • Works to develop a positive relation with all members of the campus community including students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Advises public on ways to make them more secure and seeks public support for crime prevention.
  • Hands-on presence on campus by developing and maintaining a positive rapport with students, visitors, faculty, and staff.
  • Actively participate in crime prevention and community policing activities.
  • Assists the general public by answering inquiries, providing directions, and other similar general service activities.
  • Patrols campus during special events such as concerts, football and basketball games, and other similar activities which draw large crowds of people.
  • Directs traffic after said events to alleviate congestion.
  • Provides for crowd control, including assisting Campus Police Officers in subduing large numbers of intoxicated persons.
  • Watches for fire, fire hazards, safety hazards, and other dangerous or damaging situations.
  • Takes appropriate action when a water leak, chemical spill, or other related hazardous condition is detected.
  • Administers first-aid to injured or sick persons and provides or arranges for necessary transportation.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
