About The Position

Under the supervision of a site administrator or designee, this role provides supervision to students during morning drop-off, recess, lunch, and end-of-day release. The Campus Safety Assistant monitors parking areas, guides traffic, and ensures students comply with health and safety regulations. This position is distinct from the Campus Safety Assistant-Secondary role, focusing specifically on elementary school campuses.

Requirements

  • Any combination of education and experience that will provide the ability to meet the minimum qualifications and perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Some experience working with school-aged children is highly desirable.
  • Valid First-Aid and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) Certificates shall be obtained for permanency in this classification (within 6 months of employment) and must be renewed as necessary during employment.
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license.
  • Knowledge of general campus safety and security.
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate communication strategies.
  • Knowledge of fundamentals in first aid and response to various common student injuries.
  • Knowledge of conflict resolution techniques amongst school-age children.
  • Knowledge of District and school policies, rules, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations, including basic first aid, CPR, AED, and bloodborne pathogens.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to be courteous and respectful of others.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, exhibit integrity, and resourcefulness.
  • Ability to communicate and maintain cooperative working relationships with students and others.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Ability to diffuse confrontations and discourage violence and vandalism.
  • Ability to understand and respond appropriately to emergency procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • First aid and CPR certification is highly desirable.
  • Alternate variations of education/experience may be considered by Personnel Commission staff as acceptable to qualify for participation in the examination process.
  • Additional work experience beyond the minimum requirement may be supplemented for required minimum education requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol and monitor assigned District school campus areas and/or property to maintain order, safety, and security.
  • Supervise students in walkways, lunch areas, restrooms, parking lots, play fields, and adjacent areas.
  • Monitor students inside classroom and multipurpose room areas during non-instructional time, including during rainy days or as assigned.
  • Assist students in the cafeteria with receiving meals and facilitate lunch lines, including helping younger students with opening food items.
  • Assist students with and participate in cleaning up lunch areas, including spills, disposing of trash, and wiping tables.
  • Assist in conflict resolution according to established guidelines and intervene as necessary.
  • Advise students of consequences for rule violations.
  • Take action to prevent or break up fights and disturbances, and escort students to the office for disciplinary action.
  • Issue equipment approved for use in lunch time outdoor activities and maintain order in games and play activities.
  • Evaluate student injuries, determine the course of action, perform minor first aid, and complete required paperwork.
  • Enforce school and District rules, regulations, and policies for the safety and security of students, staff, and property.
  • Report unusual activities or unauthorized persons on campus to appropriate personnel.
  • Monitor campus for unauthorized personnel entry, check for visitors' passes, and direct/escort the general public to the administration office.
  • Encourage and promote courtesy among students, report cases of unusual behavior or other problems, and observe and report safety hazards.
  • Prevent students from engaging in unsafe activities.
  • Identify, correct, and/or report safety hazards that may compromise student/staff safety.
  • Monitor parking lots for proper parking procedures and traffic flow, and open and secure gates.
  • Assist with crowd control at school events.
  • Assist in custodial duties, including wiping tables and benches in cafeteria and/or outside eating areas.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
