About The Position

Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey (GSHNJ) is seeking a talented and passionate Camp Ranger to join their Mission Alignment team. This role is crucial for the safe, functional, and well-maintained operation of GSHNJ’s outdoor properties, primarily focusing on The OVAL in Maplewood, NJ, and Camp DeWitt in Hillsborough, NJ. The Camp Ranger ensures that facilities, grounds, and equipment are kept to a high standard to support day camp operations, rental groups, and year-round programming. Additionally, this position provides support to other council properties as needed, including assisting at the sleepaway camp during the off-season and supporting operational needs during the cookie program season.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Basic carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and masonry knowledge.
  • Basic knowledge of hand and power tools such as wrenches, hammers, skill saws, table saws, power drills, drill presses, routers, sanders, etc.
  • Basic grounds maintenance equipment such as chain saws, ride-on lawnmowers, push lawnmowers, weed whackers, brush cutters, power washers, etc.
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain a variety of vehicles and equipment including utility vehicles, golf carts, tractors, and lawnmowers.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to routinely lift and carry items weighing up to sixty pounds and occasionally up to eighty pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and perform physical labor for extended periods.
  • Ability to work outside for an extended period.
  • Ability to climb a ladder.
  • Flexibility to shift work hours as needed, including evenings and weekends.
  • A valid driver’s license is required if driving a council vehicle.
  • Reliable transportation, whether the employee’s own vehicle or public transportation, is necessary for travel between council properties and throughout the entire service area as needed.
  • Become a registered member of Girl Scouts and maintain membership for duration of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • 2+ years previous experience in facilities maintenance, groundskeeping, or related field preferred.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce software and applications preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance tasks and repairs to ensure proper upkeep of property, buildings, equipment, and grounds.
  • Monitor Camp usage calendars and maintain cleanliness and readiness of camp facilities, including cabins, tents, and multi-purpose buildings.
  • Assist with the opening and closing of camp properties, including winterization of cabins and facilities for the off-season.
  • Support maintenance and improvement projects at various GSHNJ properties during the off-season.
  • Conduct routine security checks of property, buildings, and grounds.
  • Identify and report safety or security concerns promptly to the Maintenance Property Manager.
  • Help ensure all camp environments remain safe, secure, and compliant with organizational standards.
  • Partner with the Maintenance Property Manager to identify and execute improvement projects, including obtaining quotes, procuring supplies/equipment, and supporting project completion.
  • Supervise and coordinate outside contractors and vendors as needed.
  • Collaborate with representatives from the Essex County Department of Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs.
  • Assist with the storage, organization, and distribution of camp supplies and equipment.
  • Support camp operations, including assisting with cookouts and other on-site activities as needed.
  • Attend staff trainings and meetings as scheduled.
  • Serve as the primary facilities support for The OVAL and Camp DeWitt, year-round.
  • Travel between multiple GSHNJ properties to support maintenance, operations, and program needs.
  • Provide support to the sleepaway camp during the off-season as needed.
  • Assist with council-wide operational needs, including the cookie program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
