About The Position

Under supervision of the Camp Maintenance Foreman, the Camp Laborer is responsible for performing labor as needed to assist the Camp Maintenance Foreman in maintaining all camp utilities and domestic services. Duties will also include Field Technician. Under supervision of Senior Geologist/Project Manager, the Field Technician is responsible for assisting with field work performed in challenging terrain and conditions such as soil and rock sampling, prospecting, trail building/clearing, brush cutting, and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of safe operation of hand and power tools.
  • Basic knowledge of using and navigating with GPS, marking a waypoint, using a map.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently.
  • Ability to work in harsh weather and terrain conditions.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals, terrain maps.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to communicate by phone, email or text for planning and scheduling as needed.
  • Ability to complete project inventory forms such as purchase lists and timesheets.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, contractors, or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ability to safely operate an ATV or UTV with helmet use.
  • Ability to use firearm in a safe manner for which it is prescribed for bear and predator defense.
  • Ability to clearly communicate via radio, satellite phone, satellite device, etc. for safety checks and emergency communications, as needed.
  • Ability to safety work around fixed-wing aircraft and/or helicopters.
  • Ability to use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for a given job.
  • Ability to maintain healthy interpersonal work relationships for three-four week work shifts.
  • Ability to maintain personal health, and recognize and not exceed personal physical limitations that may result in accident, injury and/or down time by communicating potential issues with the supervisor in a timely manner.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous experience and knowledge working in a remote site or mineral exploration camp setting.
  • Valid state driver’s license and be qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of Calista’s Driving Policy.
  • Proficient in safe firearm use, under all conditions, for bear and predator defense.
  • Previous First Aid training.
  • Previous Fuel handling experience.
  • Ability to pass a drug, driving, and background screening.

Responsibilities

  • Work in a safe manner and constant state of alertness.
  • Proactively engage in creating and maintaining a ‘Safety First’ work culture, such as participating in and taking turns leading Toolbox & Safety Meetings.
  • Effectively identify and communicate identification of new, existing, or evolving hazards in the workplace and relay to supervisors.
  • Assist in minimizing and eliminating hazards to all employees while in or around camp.
  • Be a professional, proactive, and courteous team member.
  • Perform manual labor services when required including carpentry and mechanical work.
  • Work in a manner to maintain work spaces and common areas in an organized, neat, and tidy.
  • Assist in the maintenance of ATVs and UTVs including oil changes and fueling, while ensuring no fuels, oils or lubricants are spilled or contaminate the environment.
  • Assist in inventorying and palletizing surface samples and drill core, as needed.
  • Assist with drill core technician duties such as photographing or measuring drill core, as needed.
  • Unload and load the supply aircrafts, transport supplies to/from camp, unload/unpack/inventory supplies, including food, supplies, fuel, etc.
  • Maintain and keep campsite clear by cutting brush.
  • Assist in the maintenance and organization of all camp supplies, including shop tools.
  • Perform kitchen work including cleaning and sanitizing kitchen and eating areas, meal planning and preparation, and cooking, as needed.
  • Assist Foreman with winterizing and de-winterizing campsite, as assigned.
  • Perform field technician work including prospecting and collecting rock, soil, silt, and pan concentrate samples following standardized sample collection and documentation methods with GPS and field notebook.
  • Complete data entry and file organization related to field technician work promptly.
  • Assist with field work including geologist field work support, wildlife and hazard awareness, trail reconnaissance, and trail clearing and maintenance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
