The American Red Cross is hiring 8 part-time Summer Camp Counselors in Philadelphia. The positions are temporary running 6 weeks at 20 hours per week. The Summer Camp Counselor position supports the Youth Disaster Preparedness Program within the Southeastern Pennsylvania Disaster Cycle Services Region. Counselors deliver disaster preparedness education to Philadelphia Parks and Recreation youth summer camp locations July 13 – August 14 from 9am – 1pm Monday – Friday within the City of Philadelphia. Counselors participate in a one-week onboarding training July 6 – 11 from 8:30am – 5pm. Counselors will drive Red Cross fleet vehicles to travel to camp locations. Counselors need to pass a child protective services background check along with a good driver record as reported by the Division of Motor Vehicles. The “Save a Life” Summer Camp Program saves lives and prevents injury by providing instruction for Disaster Cycle Services youth curriculum supporting the Prepare with Pedro, Be Red Cross Ready and Hands Only CPR programs. Prepare with Pedro is a 30-45-minute presentation that provides home fire safety and preparedness education to youth ages 4-8 in camp settings by following Pedro the Penguin as he learns how to be prepared and take action before, during and after an emergency. The Be Red Cross Ready program is a 30-45-minute presentation that provides home fire safety and local hazards emergency preparedness education to youth ages 9-12 in camp settings educating on how to be prepared and take action before, during and after an emergency. The Hands Only CPR program is a 15 – 25-minute presentation that teaches youth ages 9-12 how to check for consciousness, call 911 and give continuous chest compressions instructing bystanders how to deliver life-saving care until professional responders arrive. Utilization of tools for this program includes a standardized curriculum, workbook, quizzes, and activities that have been constructed with the help of curriculum and hazard experts. Presenter tools are used to foster consistency and fidelity to the program’s goals and objectives. The highly interactive presentations address home fire safety, local natural hazards, psycho-social coping skills and household preparedness steps. Team member roles rotate daily across a team of three to four members to include being a driver, presenter, presentation assistant and administrative support.
