Camera Systems Engineer

Meta•Redmond, WA
•$173,000 - $245,000

About The Position

At Meta Reality Labs, the team develops display and optics technologies for Meta’s Wearables and Mixed Reality products. Its mission is to create see-through display systems that blend the real and virtual realms, including the architecture and display subsystems for AR glasses based on technologies developed across Meta. The work spans advanced display technologies for AR and VR, display silicon architecture, applied perception studies, image quality, and long-term platform roadmaps. Within XDO, the team also develops test, characterization, metrology, and data solutions for transparent display systems. The Camera Systems Engineer provides technical leadership and ownership for camera modules, from defining specifications and analyzing build data through integration, validation, and failure analysis. The role works closely with cross-functional engineering teams and suppliers to resolve technical challenges and deliver camera modules that meet system and performance requirements.

Requirements

  • BS in Optics, Imaging Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 8+ years of hands-on technical experience in consumer electronics hardware development.
  • Knowledge of camera-module design principles and best practices, image-quality fundamentals, and their system drivers.
  • Experience communicating and working with cross-functional groups.
  • Experience with consumer electronics manufacturing and partnering with Asia-based suppliers and contract manufacturers.
  • Data analysis experience using JMP, MATLAB, Excel, or other analysis software.
  • Experience in camera-module design, optical simulation, metrology, testing, and lab work to verify imaging-component, assembly, and system-level performance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience communicating technical decisions and project status to cross-functional stakeholders through written reports, design reviews, and presentations.
  • Mechanical tolerance analysis experience.
  • ISP tuning experience.
  • Experience with color science and image-quality evaluation methodology.
  • Experience working with Android camera HAL.
  • Electrical circuit design and testing experience.
  • Systems engineering experience.
  • Imaging lens design and characterization experience, including compact lens optics.
  • Image sensor design, characterization, and tuning experience.
  • MS degree in Optical Engineering, Imaging Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 10% of the time.
  • Camera-module manufacturing processes and production testing experience.
  • Depth-sensing system design and manufacturing experience.
  • Image processing in Python or MATLAB.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and ownership for all technical aspects of camera modules, serving as the primary point of contact.
  • Define detailed camera-module technical specifications and requirements that are comprehensive, achievable, and aligned with system architecture and project goals.
  • Analyze data from actual builds to validate design and simulation accuracy, and lead iterative design cycles for continuous improvement.
  • Coordinate with architecture, sensor, mechanical, electrical, optical, validation, process, testing, quality, reliability, system hardware, and software engineering teams to integrate camera modules and resolve technical challenges.
  • Identify, communicate, and resolve technical risks, and implement mitigation strategies to minimize impacts on timelines and deliverables.
  • Maintain documentation of technical decisions, design iterations, and test results.
  • Report progress, challenges, escalations, and successes to leadership and stakeholders.
  • Lead camera testing and validation to confirm the final product meets technical and performance criteria.
  • Perform failure analysis and debugging of camera hardware at module and product levels.
