Apple•Cupertino, CA

About The Position

As part of Apple’s Camera Technologies group and Camera Hardware Engineering group, the Camera Mechanical Design Engineer helps develop high-performance, compact camera modules for Apple products. The role takes ownership of camera hardware projects and leads engagements with product and technology teams, contributing to research, design, development, testing, and qualification of camera hardware. The goal is to help deliver innovative camera systems and photography experiences, from sensor to lens. The engineer designs camera module structures and packaging in CAD, develops component parts, creates manufacturing and inspection documentation, performs tolerance analysis, and works with manufacturing partners to improve manufacturability and resolve mechanical issues. The role also directs FEA engineers in evaluating camera designs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Optical Science, Physics, or a related field.
  • Experience with mechanical design using a 3D CAD molding and drafting package.
  • Experience with basic structural and thermal finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Ability to perform complex tolerance analysis of precision mechanical designs, with excellent understanding of GD&T.
  • Ability to design for plastic injection molding and metal stamping for mass production.
  • Experience researching, selecting, and testing materials, and assessing their processability.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree.
  • PCB design experience.
  • Experience with magnetic simulation, actuators, and voice coil motors (VCM) for camera modules.

Responsibilities

  • Lead camera hardware projects in engagements with product and technology teams.
  • Design camera module structures and packaging in CAD.
  • Design injection-molded, sheet metal, PCB, and other component parts.
  • Create detailed 2D manufacturing and inspection drawings.
  • Perform rigorous tolerance analysis of module designs and component parts.
  • Work with component-part and camera manufacturing partners on design manufacturability and mechanical issue resolution.
  • Document mechanical inspection and test requirements.
  • Direct FEA engineers in evaluating camera designs.
