About The Position

VMEC (Vehicle Motion Embedded Controls) is hiring a Battery System Controls Calibration Engineer to join a production-focused team that defines, develops, and continuously improves calibration for control strategies, diagnostics, and controller communication on GM’s electric vehicles. In this role, you will turn advanced EV control designs into robust, production-ready calibrations using data from simulation, lab, and vehicle environments. You will partner closely with software scrums, other calibration scrums, system safety, and validation teams on features spanning high-voltage automotive systems, electric propulsion, and battery charging, ensuring that software behaves safely, intuitively, and consistently for customers. This space is rich with technical leadership opportunities, from driving new calibration methods and virtual test capabilities to shaping how we execute. We are looking for creative, highly motivated, detail‑oriented calibrators who are comfortable working across multiple engineering disciplines and business partners, can solve complex problems with data‑driven rigor, and thrive in a fast‑moving environment where collaboration and continuous improvement are core to how we deliver.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Controls, Computer Engineering, or a related field
  • 0–2 years of experience (internships or projects included) in automotive controls, diagnostics, or calibration; exposure to EV or high-voltage systems is a plus
  • Foundational understanding of embedded systems and diagnostics for vehicles (powertrain, battery, charging, or related areas)
  • Familiarity with common engineering tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, Python, INCA, or Vehicle Spy through coursework or hands-on projects
  • Basic knowledge of automotive communication protocols (CAN, LIN, Ethernet)
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze data and support calibration or testing activities with guidance
  • Good communication skills and ability to work with cross-functional teams (software, systems, validation, etc.)
  • Exposure to diagnostics or safety concepts (DTCs, OBD, or similar) through academic or project experience is a plus

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in relevant engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years focused specifically on high‑voltage battery diagnostics (HVBD) or closely related EV diagnostic domains.
  • Experience with GM calibration standard work (CalPlanner, CalCheck, CEGs, JFTs) Or Jira.
  • Familiarity with virtual and lab‑based calibration methods (SIL, HIL/ChIL, CoSim, BSL).
  • Demonstrated impact in process improvement or method development (e.g., new robustness methods, automation scripts, or tools) within a calibration or diagnostics team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and own high-voltage battery diagnostic calibrations for GM electric vehicles, including cell, pack, current, temperature, and controller‑integrity diagnostics.
  • Turn advanced EV control designs into robust, production-ready calibrations using data from simulation, lab benches, and vehicle testing.
  • Validate diagnostic performance and robustness across SIL, HIL/ChIL, battery lab, and vehicle environments to minimize false alarms while protecting safety and hardware.
  • Collaborate closely with software scrums, other calibration scrums, system safety, and validation teams to ensure diagnostics align with feature intent, safety goals, and test coverage.
  • Lead calibration‑driven issue resolution by analyzing data, defining fixes, and driving on‑time closure to support launch quality and field reliability.
  • Maintain and improve standard work (procedures, test plans, calibration rules and checks) so HV battery diagnostics are consistent and scalable across EV programs and architectures.
  • Manage calibration content through GM’s calibration tools and workflows (change management, reviews, and release processes) to ensure traceable, high‑quality software deliveries.
  • Use product health and field data (e.g., diagnostic metrics and robustness indicators) to identify trends, refine calibrations, and reduce customer-impacting diagnostic issues over time.
