Cage Wash Technician I- Division of Animal Resources, School of Medicine
About The Position
Performs routine cage sanitation and preparation for reuse in a research setting. Responsibilities include maintaining cages and sanitary conditions, monitoring equipment, operating washers and autoclaves, and performing equipment cleaning and preventive maintenance. The position also involves handling and transporting supplies, following safety requirements, and may include training or directing other technicians. Tasks are generally performed in person at an Emory University location; remote-work options may be granted at department discretion and may be changed with notice.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One year of cage-wash or animal-care experience.
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
- Some positions may require a valid Georgia driver's license and an insurable driving record.
Responsibilities
- Sanitize cages and prepare them for reuse in a research setting.
- Maintain cages and monitor equipment for proper functioning and sanitary conditions.
- Operate washers and keep cage-washing and related equipment in proper working order through cleaning and preventive maintenance.
- Perform routine equipment start-up and shutdown procedures.
- Operate an autoclave to sterilize or decontaminate caging equipment.
- Assist with receiving and storing materials, food, and supplies.
- Transport caging supplies between animal rooms and cage-wash rooms.
- Maintain sanitary conditions in cage-washing rooms and ancillary areas, including hallways and storage areas.
- May assist in training new technicians and provide guidance and direction to Cage Wash Trainees.
- Work independently and may act in a lead capacity in the cage-wash area when the supervisor is absent.
- Take precautions consistent with OSHA standards and applicable federal and state regulations when working with hazardous chemicals, materials, animals, and power equipment.
- Use required personal protective equipment.
- Perform related responsibilities as required.
