About The Position

The Cafeteria Monitor ensures the health, safety, and welfare of students in elementary school cafeterias. The role supervises students during lunch periods, supports safe and orderly cafeteria operations, and assists students with meals and proper food disposal. The monitor follows school policies and hygiene practices, works cooperatively with school employees, staff, students, and parents, and may attend educational or in-service programs and meetings as requested. Other duties may be assigned.

The position is a 180-day hourly contract, with hours varying by school location. Performance is evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations for classified personnel.

Requirements

• Ability to follow oral and written directions.
• Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with elementary school-age children, school staff, and parents.

Responsibilities

• Supervise students in the cafeteria during lunch periods, including in serving lines, while eating, and during dismissal.
• Maintain discipline in the cafeteria according to school policy.
• Report student injuries, accidents, illnesses, and discipline problems to the appropriate staff member as soon as possible.
• Assist with cleanup of spills and accidents.
• Follow proper hand-washing and hygiene practices.
• Clean and sanitize lunch tables after each use.
• Help students open milk cartons, condiments, and similar items as needed.
• Encourage students to try new foods and periodically provide nutrition education.
• Help students properly dispose of food and beverages, including collecting compostable foods when applicable.
• Refill condiments, silverware, and water coolers as needed.
• Cooperate with other employees, school staff, and students.
• Attend educational and in-service programs and meetings as requested by the Director of School Nutrition and Building Principal.
• Model non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
