About The Position

The Cafeteria Aide supervises students during lunchtime and helps them transition into and move around the lunchroom. The aide supports students as they obtain lunch and monitors their behavior while they eat to promote an orderly, safe, and respectful environment. The role also helps students develop lunchroom etiquette, good manners, cleanup habits, and positive interactions with peers.

The aide guides students through the lunchroom and lunch line, assists younger children with trays, milk, condiments, and opening food items, and provides appropriate discipline according to school rules. Other duties include helping students clean up spills and tables, preparing the lunchroom between sessions, removing trash, and coordinating with kitchen, custodial, and instructional staff to improve lunchtime operations. The aide may perform other assigned duties to support school staff and ensure appropriate student supervision while staff take lunch breaks.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to lift 20–25 pounds.
• Ability to relate to children in a positive but firm manner.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills with children and adults.
• Ability to work as a member of a team.
• Ability to form and maintain appropriate relationships and personal boundaries with children.
• Emotional resilience when working with challenging behaviors.

Responsibilities

• Supervise students in the cafeteria during lunchtime and guide transitions into and around the lunchroom.
• Assist students in obtaining their lunches and encourage orderly behavior in the lunch line.
• Supervise students while they eat to ensure they are orderly, safe, and mannerly.
• Teach and encourage appropriate lunchroom etiquette, good manners, cleanup habits, and positive interaction among students.
• Assist younger children with lunch trays, milk, condiments, and opening lunch items.
• Monitor student behavior and provide appropriate discipline within school rules.
• Help students clean up spills, wipe tables, and dispose of trash.
• Wash tables, pick up floor trash, and prepare condiments between lunch sessions and after lunch.
• Work with kitchen, custodial, and instructional staff to help lunchtime run smoothly and efficiently.
• Remove trash from the lunchroom and deposit it in large waste containers.
• Perform general lunchroom cleanup.
• Perform other assigned duties to support school staff in providing appropriate supervision while staff take lunch breaks.
