About The Position

The City of Windsor is seeking a CAD Technician III for Special Projects within the Engineering - Geomatics department. This role reports to the Drafting Supervisor and is responsible for carrying out various CAD tasks, including the preparation of digital drawings for road and sewer construction, composite maps, charts, council drawings, topographic maps, and sewer network drawings using AutoCAD Map software. The position also involves assisting in the maintenance of the digital sewer atlas, updating construction As-builts, extracting digital data, interpreting field notes and survey data, and producing presentation drawings for public meetings and engineering projects. Additionally, the CAD Technician will help produce digital maps for the City website, maintain construction detour and road closure pages, develop new maps using Adobe Illustrator, and act as a team/job captain for special projects. This role provides technical support, develops new procedures, and directs junior staff in the Supervisor's absence. The technician will also review construction drawing sets created by staff before submission and work in a computerized Windows 11 environment, operating office equipment such as printers, plotters, and scanners. Providing technical assistance to customer inquiries, maintaining amiable relations with co-workers and the public, performing site visits and deliveries, and adhering to Occupational Health & Safety duties are also key aspects of this position.

Requirements

  • A three (3) year post-secondary school Community College Diploma in Civil or Architectural Technology or related field, or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalencies.
  • Over three (3) years of progressive AutoCAD drafting experience.
  • Two (2) years of experience working all day in complex drawings such as, or similar to, road and sewer construction engineering drawings in a municipal engineering environment.
  • Experience in a Windows 11 environment (file management and data conversion).
  • Certification or eligibility for certification as a Technician with O.A.C.E.T.T. or other recognized professional organization.
  • Ability to travel to off site locations in a timely and expedient manner as required.
  • If method of travel is by vehicle, a current valid and lawful driver’s licence is required in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act and must provide a driver’s abstract as a condition of employment.
  • Completion of a post-offer agility test.
  • Familiarity with road and sewer construction and land survey terminology.
  • Training in the use of AutoCAD Map 3D 2023, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and Adobe Acrobat Pro (must have, or acquire as directed).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of other graphic software, such as Adobe Design Apps, etc.
  • Proficiency in the Windows 11 environment, file management and data conversion.
  • Willingness to be trained in the use of new software.
  • Proven ability to operate hardware peripherals such as a scanner, plotter and printer.
  • Self-motivated, able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Proven verbal and written abilities.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to GIS concepts.
  • Exposure to AutoCAD menu/macro customization.
  • Successfully completed training in the Microsoft 365 Products (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint).

Responsibilities

  • Carrying out CAD tasks as assigned, including the preparation of digital road and sewer construction drawings, composite maps, charts, council drawings, topographic maps, sewer network drawings using AutoCAD Map software.
  • Assisting in the maintenance of the digital sewer atlas, update construction As-builts, extract digital data from various sources, interpret field notes and Total Station survey data from Field Services and other related drafting.
  • Producing presentation drawings for public meetings and engineering projects, and helping produce digital maps for the MAPS pages on the City website, as well as maintaining the Construction Detours and Road Closure pages on the web.
  • Developing new maps using Adobe Illustrator software, from concept to print-ready state, for outside professional printing.
  • Acting as team/job captain for special projects, assisting the Supervisor with technical support, developing new procedures and providing direction to junior staff in the absence of the Supervisor, or as required.
  • Reviewing road and sewer construction drawing sets created by staff before they are submitted to the Supervisor.
  • Working in a computerized Windows 11 environment.
  • Operating all office related equipment including printers, plotters, large and flat-bed scanners.
  • Providing technical assistance to customer inquiries as required.
  • Maintaining amiable relations with co-workers and the public.
  • Performing site visits and deliveries.
  • Performing Occupational Health & Safety duties as outlined in the Corporation’s Health and Safety Program.
  • Performing other related duties as required.
