CAD Designer - HVAC

Modigent•Harlingen, TX

About The Position

The CAD Designer - HVAC prepares detailed 2D and 3D drawings, models, and documentation for HVAC systems using computer-aided design (CAD) tools. This role supports project teams by creating accurate designs, shop drawings, and fabrication details for ductwork, piping, equipment layouts, and related mechanical components. The position ensures designs meet project requirements, industry standards, budgets, and deadlines while facilitating coordination with operations, field teams, and other disciplines in design-build and traditional project environments.

Requirements

  • Technical school certificate, associate’s degree, or completion of an applicable skilled trades program in CAD Drafting, Mechanical Design, HVAC Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 2–5+ years of experience in CAD design/drafting, with a focus on HVAC systems, ductwork, piping, or mechanical construction.
  • Solid working knowledge of HVAC fabrication processes, including duct and pipe spooling, layout, and installation considerations.
  • Proficiency in CAD software such as AutoCAD (essential); experience with 3D modeling tools (e.g., Revit MEP, Fabrication CADmep, or similar) preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, and mechanical drawings, specifications, and submittals.
  • Strong attention to detail, spatial reasoning, and ability to handle moderately complex design issues independently while escalating advanced problems.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a collaborative environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in commercial, industrial, healthcare, or critical environment HVAC projects.
  • Familiarity with BIM workflows, clash detection (e.g., Navisworks), or prefabrication/modular construction techniques.
  • Knowledge of HVAC load calculations, energy efficiency standards, or sustainable design practices.
  • Prior exposure to tools like Bluebeam, Procore, or Trimble for markup and collaboration.
  • Leadership potential or experience mentoring junior drafters.

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain detailed HVAC drawings, including plans, sections, elevations, isometrics, duct layouts, piping schematics, equipment schedules, and fabrication/spool drawings using CAD software.
  • Coordinate with HVAC operations, engineering, project management, and field teams to gather requirements, incorporate feedback, and resolve design issues.
  • Organize and prioritize work to meet project schedules, budgets, and deadlines while maintaining high-quality standards.
  • Develop frameworks and conceptual designs for HVAC systems, then produce detailed design documentation and revisions as needed.
  • Ensure all drawings and models align with project goals, Modigent standards, applicable codes (e.g., ASHRAE, IMC, SMACNA), and client specifications.
  • Suggest design improvements, optimizations, or value engineering opportunities based on initial concepts, fabrication feasibility, and field constructability.
  • Assist in material selection, equipment sizing coordination, and specification development for HVAC components.
  • Maintain organized drawing files, standards libraries, and databases for easy retrieval and version control.
  • Support prefabrication efforts by generating accurate cut lists, spool drawings, and shop-ready models.
  • Perform other related drafting, design, and technical support tasks as assigned.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation
  • Comprehensive benefits (health, vision, dental, 401(k) matching, paid time off)
  • Training
  • Software certifications
  • Career development opportunities in design, BIM, or engineering roles
